Can you get a job just stacking shelves or do you have to work on the checkouts too?

If you work nights it’s mainly stacking shelves, in the daytime you could be anywhere. However there are no specific shelf stocking roles and even a night role would include other duties.

Pretty sure you’d have to do a little bit of everything, there are so few staff in supermarkets now.

When I did nights- I never went on tills and wasn't even trained to do that. It was mostly shelf stacking, 'dressing aisles', putting out flowers. However there are less night jobs now if that is what you are after as supermarkets don't want to pay the night shift premium. Our store was one of the biggest in the region so thats why we still had a night shift.

Depending on the store there are definitely roles that do not involve being on a checkout.
Non-24hr stores have whole teams of shelf stackers working nights (they also dress the shelves) and you never meet a customer.
Even in 24hr stores or on day shifts, while you are expected to help a customer if they ask you a question, there are lots of staff who are not checkout or customer service desk trained.
