I've got -£250 on my electric ccount now which is pretty good as we managed to pay off all the winter debt of £2k over the year.
When's everyone putting there's on? Do you hold off as long as possible?

no heating on here yet , house is pretty warm. I think we are about £60 in credit in electric and £250 credit on gas.

ScarlettSunset · 14/09/2025 08:22

I just pay for what I use monthly so don't build up credit or debt.
Not got the heating on yet but it's still not that cold where I live though and it'll probably be next month when it goes on.

Where is it cold enough to have the heating on during the day? At most it’s jumper weather here in the evening, but I’m still wearing sleeveless tops during the day and taking a cardigan out, just in case.

It was 5C in Glasgow overnight and only 8C this morning, so pretty chilly here at the moment.

We are currently over £500 in credit but it was much more .
For months our energy supplier has set our bill at £30 per month and the rest comes off the credit.
Will miss that when we run out .
Heating not yet on but will also supplement with the log burner .

Perfect28 · 14/09/2025 08:24

£600 in credit, I checked recently to see what's advised because this seems high but it's around 2 winter months, which is about right for this time of year

I'm in the southeast but my house is particularly cold and both DD and I feel the cold, I wear long sleeves when it is 19/20 I would never go out in 17 (yesterday's temp here) in your attire.

Perfect28 · 14/09/2025 08:24

Yes, heating is on this morning!

Tiredandannoyed2023 · 14/09/2025 08:26

We’re in £498 credit and they’re still putting our monthly payment up 🙄 The heating has only been on once so far and that was a 30 minute boost when the house felt chilly.

GentleSheep · 14/09/2025 08:26

£550 in credit, put heating on yesterday for a little while as I was quite cold and noticed the house temperature was below where I am comfortable.

HauntedHero · 14/09/2025 08:26

We're in credit but our heating comes on all year if it drops below 18 in the kitchen during the day. It's kicked in a few mornings in the past week. I don't really understand going by the seasons over the actual temperature.

We pay 70 a month combined gas and electric.

Scotland says hello! Was 6 degrees when I walked home from an evening out on Friday. It’s only 9 here so far in the north-east this morning.

Allthings · 14/09/2025 08:28

@Tiredandannoyed2023 if you are on the standard variable rate, that will be increasing from 1 Oct, which could be why your DD is going up.

It's been 5 degrees some mornings this week in the East Midlands. I've been walking in thermal base layer and a jacket even during the day.

Forecast here (south) is between 14 & 19 today so definitely no heating on.

Crunchymum · 14/09/2025 08:29

Allthings · 14/09/2025 08:16

@Crunchymum your unit rates and standing charges will have been fixed, not your monthly payments. If you use more energy than predicted, the unit rates and standing charges will remain as per the fix, but the monthly payments will go up.

But why did they let me fix for 15 months (they have had my monthly readings for years), charge me a fee to secure the price fix and then a few months later up my charges anyway?

They shouldn't have offered me the deal to begin with?

My usage shouldn't have been that high as this was in spring so heating wasn't on as much? I'm just pissed off they've charged me to keep my costs lower and then upped them anyway?

I've just re-read the emails and yes I was just securing the daily rate and standing charge for 16 months (not 15!) but it did a calculation for me so price I was paying in January versus price I would pay on this price fix. Of course on estimated usage. Fuckers.

I was paying £165pcm, paid £250 in February 2025 (the £85 extra was to move tariff) had 4 months as £153pcm before they put it up to £185pcm in July?

It's insane.

LotsOfSmallThings · 14/09/2025 08:30

£400-odd in credit here. Will need it as winter bills absolutely skyrocket (no tumble dryer and damp house so have the dehumidifiers running 24/7 over winter) and due a baby in November so will be at home/want the heating on more than usual I think. I always did payg until last year when the bills went mental and there was a few months of £300+ so switched to dd and have built up some credit in preparation this year.

Goldenbear · 14/09/2025 08:30

Goldenbear · 14/09/2025 08:29

6 degrees?! Wow,

That was supposed to read, "Wow, that is cold for September".

Rollercoaster1920 · 14/09/2025 08:30

I'm in credit, about £350. Heating isn't on yet.

My summer bills vary a lot from winter bike due to having solar panels. Possibly a £250 difference.

In summer I'm getting £50 per month selling electricity to the grid, with minimal gas use for hot water and cooking.
In winter I get a lot less solar energy, and use a lot more gas for hot water, heating and cooking. So building the buffer is important for me to spread the cost. Even with octopus it's been a bit of a battle to get the direct debit correct. In winter they want me to raise it, in summer lower it. They even raised it for me once so I had to phone up to complain.

EBoo80 · 14/09/2025 08:31

In Scotland and the thermostat has been around 15 in the mornings, so we might start having an hour of heating to get the kids out of bed. Definitely switching the heavier duvets etc back on.
Am annoyed that we haven’t done the loft insulation upgrade over the summer, but we are in good credit (we pay £120 a month but that includes our electric car so no fuel costs).

OldBeyondMyYears · 14/09/2025 08:31

I’m £650 in credit! Didn’t realise until your post prompted me to look! 😬 I will leave it in though, so winter bills won’t be so scary 🤣

NotItsyBitsyNorTeenyWeeny · 14/09/2025 08:32

I also have no idea if we are in credit or debit.

We do hold off longer than this to put it on though. Probably till end of October or so, but we are in the south east of england so it isn't especially cold here yet

We’re on a fixed tariff.

countdowntonap · 14/09/2025 08:35

Hundreds of pounds in credit, and will most likely finish the winter in a small amount credit.
DH and I were both wearing shorts and vest around the house yesterday - we even went out for a walk in shorts! Therefore, we are no where near putting the heating on in our house.

SFRSmum · 14/09/2025 08:35

£750 in credit, I keep thinking about requesting a refund but think its probably best in the account just incase...

No heating on yet, although we have had the fire on a few times since the beginning of September (in Scotland, so bit cooler here)
I like to try and hold out until after the october holidays before we put the heating on.
