I've got -£250 on my electric ccount now which is pretty good as we managed to pay off all the winter debt of £2k over the year.
When's everyone putting there's on? Do you hold off as long as possible?

I’ve just switched supplier and got a £850 refund, going to be paying by VDD now. Heating not on yet, been tempted but will hold out until mid Oct at least 🤞🏻

RobinTheCavewoman · 14/09/2025 07:34

In credit.
Heating will come on when the thermostat tells it too but it's still 4 or 5 degrees over that. Need to watch for mould/damp though so may change settings.
The fluffy socks and blankets are out though!

MarvellousMonsters · 14/09/2025 07:36

I’m over £300 in credit, my heating probably won't go on for another month yet. I never turn it off, but keep the thermostat set at about 16°, and it just comes on automatically when the temperature drops below that. I pay £145 a month for gas & electricity combined, to Octopus, and there’s 3 adults in my household. We wear jumpers, warm slippers, and sit under blankets on the sofa.

Funnily enough the heating clicked on for the first time this morning.... it's set to come on if it gets under 18 degrees. I may revise that though as I agree we don't need it at the moment. We put hoodies, thick socks on and sit under a blanket if we're cold.

Shortdaysalready · 14/09/2025 07:37

Where on earth in the country are all the people who are so cold they have put their heating on or are thinking of doing so? I'm in the West of Scotland and it's nowhere near cold enough for heating yet!

My energy is still in credit but the energy company recently put my direct debit up because when I do eventually start using heating I will soon use up my credit.

You have actually reminded me OP that I need to have a look at my tariff as my fixed one comes to an end soon.

lalalalalala2024 · 14/09/2025 07:38

We are around £120 in credit, we pay £92 a month but I will put that up to 120 during the winter months from Nov - Jan. We currently spend £75 a month and I’m in a 2 bed house.

Last year it looks like I put the heating on in my October statement which is 17 October so assuming I put this on to help with drying clothes which I will start doing again soon as there’s been so much rain, I managed to get all last weeks done on Friday but again loads of rain is coming and we have no tumble dryer

sunshineandkindle · 14/09/2025 07:38

Everyone has heated Blankets in their beds and I have a thick duvet in our living room. We have hot water bottles too.

About £400 in credit.

I am hardwired not to put heating on before late October , but DH has started indignantly reading the thermostat aloud in the evenings (18) so it might not be long

Cornishclio · 14/09/2025 07:39

I have just checked my Octopus account and we are £461 in credit. I asked for a refund last month and they only gave us £35 otherwise it would be up at £500. Our normal direct debit for dual fuel is £160 a month. I did put the heating on yesterday after putting on a fleece.

TeenagersAngst · 14/09/2025 07:39

We’re £924 in credit, try and not put the heating on until end October

Edited

My concern is damp in my house

Nowhere near needing to put the heating on. All windows are open until bedtime here. I was outside in shorts until 10pm last night and am out in shorts this morning.

EchoedSilence · 14/09/2025 07:42

Couple of hundred in credit and I'll put the heating on when I'm cold. I put it on for a couple of hours yesterday.

BramStoner · 14/09/2025 07:42

£350!in credit. I don’t think we”ll put the heating on until October at the earliest but we did have a log fire the other day.

neverstopthelaundry · 14/09/2025 07:43

We are about 2 months of payments in credit. We are with Octopus and they are very good at adjusting the amounts to make sure you cover your consumption and then the extra you need to see you over the colder months.

Heating will come on no matter what time of year when the temperature drops below a certain amount, different in the night than the day. We will layer up, have blankets in the lounge and electric blankets to warm the bed at night. Our house is really good at keeping the heat in. We went round with a thermal camera several years ago and dealt with all the cold spots. You can rent them or buy one. They are very helpful in working out where you may have drafts coming in or leaking heat out.

I will tell you something that I think has made a big difference is making a box out of Kingspan insulation boards and putting that inside the loft over the loft hatch, so when you open the loft hatch you just see a silver box. If anyone wants info on how to do this I can provide a video we followed. It works in summer too, our house has been cooler.

aCatCalledFawkes · 14/09/2025 07:44

£700 in credit and yes I have put the heating on a bit. Mainly because the house feels stone cold with the drop in temperature and I just want to warm it up a bit, also I wanted to make sure the heating was working properly as waiting until you really need it to find out it won't turn on isn't ideal.

twistyizzy · 14/09/2025 07:44

We are on oil so order by the tankful. 2 orders per year ie October + March. Heating doesn't go on until 1st November at the earliest and goes off mid-March.
We have a log burner + open fire plus thermal blankets on beds and heated throws for downstairs.
Currently in credit but will be putting the October order in a few weeks.

REDB99 · 14/09/2025 07:47

£450 in credit. House is 17.5 degrees currently and the heating isn’t on but it feels a little chilly. High ceilings and large windows don’t help but having the thermally lined curtains closed makes a difference. At 16 degrees it will feel cold so I’ll turn the heating on then. The blankets, hot water bottles and slippers have been used in the last couple of days.

HazelBeeZee · 14/09/2025 07:53

£350 in credit and pay £195 a month.
It’s between 20-22 in the house so no need for heating yet. Feels cold because we get a lot of damp, especially with all the rain. I’ve stuck the dehumidifiers on and they do make such a difference with it feeling warmer once it’s cleared the damp air.

Ds’s complained it was cold last night but were both just in their boxer shorts!

HelenHywater · 14/09/2025 07:55

I'm £697 in credit. I haven't put the heating on yet. I'll aim to get into October, but drying the towels in the bathroom will be the tipping point I think - they don't dry without the heating and I can't bear showering and grabbing a damp cold towel.

I don't know how to work out how long that credit will last. Octopus actually reduced my dd last month which was good!

Nottodaythankyou123 · 14/09/2025 07:57

£500 in credit (although I’ve withdrawn £250 of it). Put the heating on at 5.30 this morning when DD2 got up as it was a little chilly. Luckily our house heats up fast and stays warm for hours, so only needed it on for 15 mins or so

NatalieH2220 · 14/09/2025 07:58

£150 in credit at the moment which makes sense after the summer. No heating on here as yet it’s still quite warm although it’s set to not drop below 18 so might have clicked on and I haven’t noticed

NotOrange · 14/09/2025 07:58

I am nothing in credit, I pay by a ridiculously high direct debit every month, and I’m never in credit, never too much in debit when the bill arrives.

Perhaps others have solar power?

Although we are talking about electricity here, and our central heating is Gas…but also no credit there, just huge expense.

Its chilly here this morning, but no heat on yet.

BunnyLake · 14/09/2025 07:58

I’m £280 in credit but won’t be switching my heating on until it’s very very cold. I’ll just layer up when needed and have a heated blanket. It’s only me at home till Christmas so for once I can be fully in control of the utilities.

Sirzy · 14/09/2025 07:59

Currently two months worth of payments in credit which is where I like to be at this time of year.

Only just moved into jumpers so not considering heating yet.
