Out of interest...Heating- are you in credit or debit? Have you got your heating on today?

I've got -£250 on my electric ccount now which is pretty good as we managed to pay off all the winter debt of £2k over the year.
When's everyone putting there's on? Do you hold off as long as possible?

£450 in credit and heating off. I'm pretty sure DH would put it on (I'm more likely to relent because the dog looks cold than DH!), but we have had the radiators removed for decorators coming in next week, so it almost certainly won't go on before the first week of October.

We also usually just leave it to the thermostat which is set to 20c in the day and 15c over night (DH has never, to my knowledge, noticed that I turn it down to 19c every morning).

Our house is pretty well insulated and looking at last winter, we only used more than our DD monthly payment late November to early March, but the previous year it was between mid-October and beginning of April.

cheesycheesy · 14/09/2025 08:00

A small amount in credit but I’m sure that will be wiped out. Nowhere near needing heating yet in London.

BunnyRuddington · 14/09/2025 08:00

Around £200 in credit so that won’t last long once the heating goes in

And no, I definitely haven’t got the heating on, I’ve got the windows open this morning to air the house (and develop some hardiness for when it does get cold Grin).

£900 in credit.
Heating has been on a couple of times.

TaborlinTheGreat · 14/09/2025 08:03

a) no idea b) no, haven't even considered it yet (not for financial reasons - it just isn't cold!)

LauraHopkins · 14/09/2025 08:05

Nearly £300 in credit and not thinking about putting it on yet. It’s still forecast to be 21-22 degrees next week

bobby81 · 14/09/2025 08:05

Over £400 in credit which is probably too much & we might get some out. Heating hasn’t been on yet but we have lit the log burner a couple of times.

Spectre8 · 14/09/2025 08:06

£260 in credit and then EDF offered a deal to give me £150 credit if I fixed my tariff as exisitn gone was ending...oh course I did so now £410 in credit will see me right through winter and then some

Ilovemyshed · 14/09/2025 08:07

No, just about moved into socks and a light jumper. Might light the fire for a couple of hours if its rainy later. Its a little cooler in the mornings, must go round and shut some windows off the vent settings.
I’m still flinging open windows in the mornings though.
Full tank of oil, money set aside for two more fills, and £150 electric credit.

Crunchymum · 14/09/2025 08:07

Despite fixing my tariff for 15 months less than 8 months ago Octopus have put my monthly charges up to £185!! (Fixed at £150 and had to pay £90 to do this)

Absolutely disgusting but I feel totally stuck as I give monthly readings and the usage adds up. It's not a massive house, we tend not to heat the bedrooms much in the evenings. I can't work out why it costs so fucking much.

So heating stays off as long as possible here. Usually October as I have 3 DC and can't let them freeze.

moppety · 14/09/2025 08:09

Ours clicked on this morning. It was 9 degrees here overnight and some rooms had dropped under the thermostat figure. It’s only going to be 14 degrees here today in general. Think this is the first time it’s gone on but it’s all automated and scheduled so I don’t ever have to do anything with it, so it may have gone on before.

We pay variable direct debit so don’t have credit in our electric account as it just takes what we used every month, but we do have it earmarked in our own account.

daffodilandtulip · 14/09/2025 08:12

I spend the month in debt, then my DD brings the balance to zero. If it doesn't, I'll make a manual payment. They don't need my interest.

About £50 in credit - I never build up a large amount of credit as don't want my money in the energy company's account!

No heating on yet - I have the thermostat set at 21 so it will kick in when it's needed. Right now it's 8 outside which is the coldest start to the day so far this autumn (London).

Much the same here. Overnight temp indoors was 18.5 at 6am this morning, which is the lowest it has been. Heating is controlled all year round by the thermostat.

poorbuthappy · 14/09/2025 08:15

£665 in credit. Ready for winter. Have done it like this for years and years. I never want to have to worry about it. And we had the first shall we pop it on for an hour row yesterday 😂

Allthings · 14/09/2025 08:16

@Crunchymum your unit rates and standing charges will have been fixed, not your monthly payments. If you use more energy than predicted, the unit rates and standing charges will remain as per the fix, but the monthly payments will go up.

roses2 · 14/09/2025 08:16

StopRainingNow · 14/09/2025 07:12

£415 credit but I've just got an electric car so no doubt I need to put up my payments to get through winter!

Well done for paying off your debt.

Out of interest do you use Octopus Agile tariff? Im thinking of switching as their daytime rates are 10p. 4-7pm is 30p+ but we only use the tv during that time.

TheCurious0range · 14/09/2025 08:17

£272 credit, 11 degrees here so far expected to rise to 19 by lunchtime, sunny. Thermostat says it's 20 degrees and that's been left downstairs in the coldest most open room, so it's probably a couple of degrees warmer upstairs. The underfloor heating in the bathroom did come in this morning which was nice and took the chill off the tiles! Probably won't start thinking about central heating until October time

I’ve just checked and I’m in debit. I presume this is due to car charging via Electroverse than actual usage in the home. But I’ve not turned on the heating, it’s far too early for that and this house isn’t a draughty bugger like the old one we had!

Sarah2891 · 14/09/2025 08:18

Ours goes on when it goes below 20c, so yes the heating has come on. Never have it on at night.

Jellycatspyjamas · 14/09/2025 08:19

I have a couple of months in credit, heating has been on for short blasts - it’s cold in the mornings and I’m up pretty early.

LoafofSellotape · 14/09/2025 08:20

I'm barely at the stage of wearing a cardi yet let alone the heating! I have the window and French doors wide open at the moment. Heating won't go on until November I suspect. We're 250 in credit.

Goldenbear · 14/09/2025 08:20

Just over £100 in credit but the boiler is broken so waiting for it to be fixed or replaced! If we had a working boiler I would definitely have put it on but I live in a cold house.

Navigatinglife100 · 14/09/2025 08:20

No heating yet and it's not needed either.

Normally would hold off until November but my father is just back from hospital so we expect to put it on earlier.

We are in £500 credit and we have a pile of dry logs in too.

BunnyLake · 14/09/2025 08:21

Where is it cold enough to have the heating on during the day? At most it’s jumper weather here in the evening, but I’m still wearing sleeveless tops during the day and taking a cardigan out, just in case.

CarlaLemarchant · 14/09/2025 08:21

£450 credit. We wouldn’t consider putting the heating on until October at the earliest and ideally mid October at that. We do put the dehumidifier on in the utility room to help dry the washing if I can’t get it outside.

Evenings are getting a bit chillier but still easy to manage with warm layers and socks.
