Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

My topping on mac and cheese is normally more parmesan, breadcrumbs, and some crispy onions.

CalzoneOnLegs · 12/09/2025 23:53

@Beesandhoney123 i thought the same about marzipan until one of our German customers sent us some chocolates at Christmas, it wasn’t that yellow substance, it was ground almonds and it was beautiful, not sweet just nutty.

@Calliopespa hsve you seen Tom kerridges Mac and cheese lesson on YouTube he uses FIVE cheeses in it !

Nothing wrong with 5 cheeses. I do a spinach and cheese lasagna with ricotta, cheddar, parmesan, cambazola and mozzarella in it.

Hmm, I begin to understand their point re cholesterol....

Oh no I haven't. I shall take a look.

But I do have a secret cheese which is transformative in a mac n cheese. You can PM me if you want it . I'm not sharing it with mac n cheese haters - casting pearls and all that!

CalzoneOnLegs · 12/09/2025 23:55

@murasaki my food heaven, with a glass of Shiraz

CalzoneOnLegs · 12/09/2025 23:55

@Calliopespa taleggio ?

Beesandhoney123 · 12/09/2025 23:55

Never had mac and cheese. But I don't like pasta. So heavy and sits in my tummy like a stone then makes me feel bloated and sickly.
Is the cheese melted or grated on?

murasaki · 12/09/2025 23:56

I also love marzipan. When I was a kid, dad used to ice the Christmas cake (still does, in his seventies) and he'd always buy too much marzipan and portion the leftovers into 3 for me and my sisters and put them in the fridge. He still does this and we are in our 40s. Bless him.

Melted into the cheese sauce, extra grated parmesan on top if you're me.

You make a bechamel sauce, so grated in and melted into the sauce. Then I like it with more grated cheese grilled to a golden brown on top, but you can leave that bit.

It's not all that healthy.

CalzoneOnLegs · 12/09/2025 23:58

@Beesandhoney123 both ! Ensuring a maximum cheese out situation

So do I - especially chocolate covered!

CalzoneOnLegs · 12/09/2025 23:58

@Calliopespa ok if served with a ‘massive salad’

I tend to think that helps. It certainly alleviates the sunken feeling a little.

Mustard / nutmeg ?

My mum does nutmeg. I sometimes do mustard but I prefer hot English with no vinegar in it.

CalzoneOnLegs · 13/09/2025 00:00

I believe we have completely taken over this thread and it’s evolved into a Mac and cheese/ cheese thread …..oh dear 🙈

Definitely. I was a total pig in Bruges just before Xmas one year. All the pretty marzipan chocolate things. It was my one sweet splurge of the decade.

A bit of wholegrain is nice.

It can. I agree with that. But a judicious amount is nice for a change. But it doesn't work with my secret mac n cheese cheese as the flavours sort of fight. A drizzle of truffle oil before the grill would work better ...

Truffle oil was definitely on the hate list up thread.

I like finely chopped buttered leeks in mine. It's practically a health food then.

It was! I noticed that too.

Yes leeks can be nice, or cauliflower.
