Just want a sense check.

How much would you expect to pay for a handyman to mount 10 floating shelves?

I have been quoted double what I expected.

Ha, he’s just told me that any handyman who would do a days work for £250 is a cowboy. Are handyman jobs anywhere going for £500 a day?!

im going to contact a couple of others. Maybe he thought he could try it on.

Omg he’s at it! Def get more quotes. £500 a day for a man with no trade 😧 I was thinking maybe £100 thinking usual day rate is £200.

I’ve been quoted £520.

He doesn't want the job. That's twice what I would expect to pay.

In fairness £250 isn’t loads once you factor in tools, fuel, tax, NI, sick pay, holidays and all the other costs of being self-employed.

Ask around. That is a lot. We live in an area where trade costs a fortune but I could get a plasterer to skim the ceiling of a large room for that, including materials. Putting up shelves is not such a skilled job.

The test of whether his price is reasonable is not what anyone on here thinks, but is whether you can get in someone else to do the job significantly cheaper.

Getting alternative quotes should always be the first port of call.

No it’s a brick wall. I’m confused about why he wants to charge that for a half day job.

Why don’t you ask him?

Sera1989 · 12/09/2025 15:21

Is this definitely a handyman - as in an “odd job” man who does bits and bobs? I thought the whole point was that they’re cheaper than getting a carpenter/builder etc. so I don’t know what this guy is on about
