Hi,
Looking to book Lanzarote for 4/5 nights in October half term with dh, ds12 and dd9. Where would people recommend in terms of location? Do you need a car to get around? Hotels? TIA

Three main resorts. Puerto del Carmen is the busiest and probably best for kids with more to do.. if you are planning on staying just in the resort no car needed.. loads of taxis outside airport.. about €30.
Playa Blanca is right at the bottom of the island and the quietest and spread out in various areas over 7km.. including the main precinct area with shops and restaurants.. The Rubicon marina with more up market restaurants and boutique shops... lovely marina and a market held there every Weds and Sat morning.. taxis can take you from one end to the other or the 130 bus does a round trip from any bus stop including playa flamingo beach and Playa Limonnes where you can get a ferry to Fueterventura for a day.. Costa Teguise is north of the airport taxi about the same €30 .. everything closer together and centred around " The square " with restaurants and bars.. plenty of shops but loads of things seem to be closing in town.. Lanzarote is an amazing island and l would recommend hiring a car from the airport ..Autoreisen on line.. pay when you get there.. cheapest and no hidden extras ( Canarian run firm) the huge main market is in Tiguise every Sunday( not to be confused with Costa Teguise) . You can book loads of trips.. so much to see.
The weather will be mid 20s with a breeze which is welcome.. most pools heated by the sun.
Ive been going 20 plus years.. prefer SC because lovely to eat out and so much choice..

Playa Blanca is a lovely, quieter resort. Puerto del Carmen has a bit more going on, and the old town harbour area is very nice in the evening.

Hiring a car depends on how much you intend to do. All the Cesar Manriquez sites are worth visiting and it would be easier for you to drive to those than get a bus or coach tour I think. Driving is easy over there.

What do you want to do?
4/5 nights is 3/4 days to fill. Mine would just want to swim in the pool and play on the beach for that amount of time. So a car would not be necessary. If you want to explore then it is.

We stayed in the Playa de los pocillos area at October half term before and enjoyed a practically empty beach and lovely weather. Just down the road from Puerto del carmen which is nicer for eating out and strolling in the evening. For a week, we hired a car, went to the caves in the north, did the volcano tour and ate the volcano cooked chicken. Went to Teguise to the market, a camel ride...lots of things to do if you want to. Would highly recommend the difficult to get to down a dirt track Playa del Papagayo. Gorgeous, but busy.

If we were going for just a few nights I would skip the car and get a resort close to the airport with beach access, pool and decent on site restaurants and just chill.

We stayed at Seaside Los Jameos and I would highly recommend for a short break. I don’t normally like AI but the quality of food and drinks were high. If you want to see around you can buy a ticket for the 6 main attractions and rent a car through the hotel for a couple of days so it gets delivered there. However for a short break, I would recommend just relaxing as Lanzarote is very much designed for that.

Oh and Seaside los Jameos is 10 minutes drive from the airport, we took the transport and waited for ages but a taxi would probably cost about 25 euros at the most.
