Cholesterol results?

I was admitted with v high BP (207/128) 2m ago. Started on BP meds (Ramipril, which was then doubled, then Felodipine added: BP now averages 160/100 so still quite high).

My total Chol was 7.1, HDL 7.2, LDL 5, Tri 2.29. I was put on 80mg Atorvastatin & ref for non urgent CT Angiogram ('sometime in October probably') Still having intermittent chest pressure, some pain & pins & needles left arm/jaw. Not exercise related. Worse when stressed. Can wake me up. Am taking Omeprazole in case it's 'overnight GERD' (but awful on bus yesterday when upright but quite stressed). Went to A&E 1m ago who said ecg OK & normal Troponin so 'all ok'.

1m later my Chol was: total 4.7, HDL 1.2, LDL 2, Tri 3.31. I didnt get these results till today but meantime stopped taking the statin as I was in such pain (lower limbs esp at old surgical & nerve damage sites). I couldn't get an appt with GP for 4 wks +. I couldn't get through to Cardiologist. I know it wasn't the best idea but I was on my knees.

Nurse just did another Chol test (no breakdown this time). Total chol back up to 7.6 so after 1m no statins so clearly the statins are needed to help total level. So I need to go back & ask to try a different kind?

I put the results into 'chat gpt' (never done that before!) & it said whilst general reduction good, Inc in Tri & big drop in HDL needs attention. Just called. GP busy for 1m. Angio not till Oct & will see Cardiologist 1m after Angio. I was also ref for FH tests but 'these take 3m' so no idea there either.

I can keep using GTN spray I was given meantime but other than that what else can I do?

I know your GP has no appointments for 1 month but they do have to keep some for urgent on the day appointments. Insist on being seen, don’t make it about the cholesterol, focus on chest pain and your increased use of GTN.

siliconcover · 11/09/2025 16:46

@MissyB1if I call GP & say chest pain they will tell me to call 999. If I'm seen in A&E a
they will check Troponin & do an ecg (hopefully). If both are OK that's good. But it can also mean that nothing's happened yet.
I'd like to understand why my Cholesterol has changed the way it has & I can't get anyone to advise, hence posting here in case anyone's had a similar experience.

I'm 57. I'm aware some of it is stress. But strong family hist of heart issues & resistant BP plus 'Maybe a cardiac shadow, maybe Pericarditis shadow' from the thoracic CT 2m ago (same Cardiologist also said 'maybe indigestion plus, it's been windy lately which affects BP' (wtf?) isn't hugely reassuring.

I have always had quite high cholesterol. Even when very young, I had a full health MOT as part of a study when 21. I’m having a CT angiogram next week, big history of heart issues in my family. My blood pressure was taken last week so my big difference to you is mine is very good. I’m also a similar age to you. But I have a musculoskeletal issue and some pain may be from this so as non urgent have waited months plus there was an issue as injured my back. I get pain and the pins and needles when stressed but not so bad as to wake me. I’m not taking statins currently, my cholesterol was quite high but my risk of calculated heart attack was still within ok parameters. I will be honest apart from the last day or two I just haven’t thought about it. My ECG was sort of ok and they said they are doing the angiogram because of the strong family history of heart disease.

The only thing you can do is try and be calmer, easier said than done. Is there any single absorbing thing that takes your mind off stuff? I have had a very social summer and also video game so have shot a lot of aliens of late.

@ViciousCurrentBunthanks for your helpful reply x I didn't know there was a strong family history until last summer when my 19 y/o Ds went into heart failure. Because I've been thinking about him since my health hadn't crossed my mind until 2m ago when I had tremendous pressure chest pressure & some pain & A&E found my BP was over 200 & my cholesterol quite high too. Cardiologist dx Pericarditis but then said not sure & waffled about his own indigestion & windy weather.
Quite right about trying to relax about it as well aware anxiety can mimic cheat issues. But because Ds had such a poor experience himself with small Cardiology dept I would like some reassurance from CT Angio asap.

I haven't had any risk calculation for heart attack mentioned. I did a Q risk online which was 17% I think.
