Christmas/work parties from years gone by and the excess (your memories)

There was a thread a long time ago (years) on this and it was so fun to read!

I'm too young to have gone to any work parties/Christmas parties from the 80s and 90s but I love hearing the stories of the grandness and excess some work places had where no expence was spared, a complete contrast to nowadays where everyone is pretty much cut to the bone.

Share your memories and stories 😁

Oh I remember being totally shocked by reading a thread on MN about work Christmas parties a couple of years ago.

I was left wondering how many marriages and relationships survived the shenanigans that go on- the statistics for cheating at these parties is really high. And wondering how many people actually lost their jobs over their behaviour.

Oh wow that sounds like there's some good stories out there!

I remember my mum coming home once with a big TV she won at the raffle at a big Xmas party. I was amazed. That would have been the 90s.

Extravagant parties still happen for the lucky few. I used to work at the Arts Club and the amount of money that was thrown around like water almost made me feel sick. Hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on a single dinner. One fucking dinner. Then I'd get the bus home at night and see people sleeping in doorways begging strangers for 50p. It makes you realise just how ridiculous money is as a concept when you see how rich people spend it.

@ReceiveIthundreds and thousands on one dinner 😳

Yep, 12k bottles of wine, 50k champagne magnums, 10k on cigars, etc. Royal family members from Saudi Arabia or Dubai would also tip ridiculous amounts like 100k on top of a 80k bill if they were trying to impress each other.

I used to work for an organisation that hired entire convention centres. .

We were met by waiters serving champagne on stilts, the bar was free and the entertainment was great, think indoor rollercoasters and dodgems and other fairground rides. Then a band or disco.
