A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yes look at the tax base - I know that they are tax lovers, but France is starting from a high base. Retirement age in the Netherlands is 70!

France has a high tax base but if you dive into the details it also has significant allowances, IMO far more than the UK that bring the headline level of income tax down.

For example the parts system that can reduce exposure to tax if you have children or dependents living with you, and even the average bloke or blokeess can often claim back expenses incurred, for example traveling to/from work..

Now I'm sure that's going to change but It's pretty much close to impossible to do a compare and contrast, UK v France, especially when it comes to income tax.

I don't know whether it's that people can't or won't see that the friendliness to expats is but a thin veneer for when le brits are out and about dans centre ville. That veneer would soon slip if it came to it and the Brits abroad would soon find their idyllic life a very expensive one. Again, instead of running away, fix the problems in your own country and that goes for all these illegals enjoying our hospitality

Plus these are the first people to slag off ex-pats 🙄

That’s a good point, it’s so hard to understand cost of living and tax differences - and getting dual tax advice is very expensive…

Nobody in the fleeing the uk if reform thread seems to understand anything about European politics - oooh I’m off to France - the country that can’t keep a prime
minister, ok then! Most of Europe hasn’t been this divided since the 1920s and 1930s.

the idea the grass is greener shows a fundamental lack political understanding.

Canada - the populist nearly won there but Carney got lucky with his standing up to Trump stuff.

good luck to them…

Edited

I doubt many will go but if mn does clear out house prices should drop so there’s that, agree btw

Rivalled · 16/09/2025 09:13

Hehhehe

Good morning 😁

Welcome to the new names on the thread. Great to have you on board.
Awful headlines for Starmer again this morning. The knives are well and truly out. I'm WFH today, so looking forward to the emergency debate later.

This week's YouGov poll:

Reform - 29 (+2)
Labour - 20 (-2)
Cons - 17 (-)
LD - 15
Gr - 10

I did notice that Burnham doesn’t appear to have £2k freebie specs - Starmer definitely on the ropes.

GabrielsOboe · 16/09/2025 09:36

Starmer gone before Xmas?

That would be a wonderful gift for so many of us….

Rivalled · 16/09/2025 09:37

If I was Starmer, I’d be parachuting him into a safe seat and getting him in the cabinet on the pissing in/pissing out logic but…would Burnham do it??

Burnham was useless in government so that could work well for Starmer. There's a reason he limped off to Manchester 😉.
I doubt Burnham would be up for it anyway, he can smell blood in the water.

His failed clean air zone signs are currently being removed across Greater Manchester at a cost of £600K.

Agree, he simply looks better because he’s been away from London politics for a while and coverage from around the country is woeful.

No we need him to stay!
I will celebrate the day he slithers out of No.10 though, whenever that may be.

Ha, good point.
There will be more housing available within catchment of the best schools 😉.

I do wonder if Reeves will be sitting down to the Labour Xmas dinner.

Cheaper for ex-independent school parents to buy then!

Don’t buy a ticket for that Xmas lunch just yet Rachel! I don’t think she’ll be leading the toasts!
