What do you think is wrong with me?

Just to pass the time, as I'm in hospital on a ward and can't sleep. I started with shortness of breath and what felt like pleurisy 8 day's ago, dr's confirmed pleurisy and said it was a viral chest infection. That was Tuesday I was given a steroid inhaler, it helped a little.
Then Wednesday i woke up and brought up a blood clot and had shooting pain through my shoulder and was struggling to catch my breath. Phoned 111 who said it was a heart attack and sent an ambulance, checked me over, my oxygen levels were good, likewise my heart trace, paramedic told me I had health anxiety, thren they left. Still felt awful but the paramedic put me off going back to drs until today. Same at dr's today they heard nothing on my lungs but had took pics of what I'd been bringing up and they sent me straight to hospital. ECG was done and was fine chest x-ray showed shadow on my left lung. Dr said I needed a cat scan but as I'm pregnant he needed to talk the consultant. Consultant says antibiotics and if no change then I'll the have a scan tomorrow. Then I was left for hours.,without been given antibiotics .Then I've been moved to a ward no longer need blood thinners and I'm being told it's pneumonia by a nurse.

That sounds really horrible, I'm sorry you're going through that and I hope you have answers soon.

Me too I tried to upload pic of what was in my drop but it wouldn't upload. The wards red hot and the one of the other patients is really unwell and on a very noisy machine. They're not choking now so it must be helping but it sounds like a washing machine fast spinning..

Oh op how horrible for you. I hope you feel better soon.

Do you have any ear plugs?

whatisheupto · 08/09/2025 23:15

Just keep advocating for yourself, keep showing the photos to every doctor that you speak to. Keep repeating yourself. Don't be fobbed off.

Happyelephants · 08/09/2025 23:17

Sorry you're so sick while you're pregnant. If they haven't given you the antibiotics which were prescribed, you need to push for them.

Hope you're on the mend soon.

BollyKnickerz · 08/09/2025 23:20

Sorry you're going through this

My guess is pulmonary embolism (PE)

I hope you get it sorted.

Idontknownowwhat · 08/09/2025 23:21

Pneumonia doesn't sound like it's the wrong shout tbh, sounds just like when I had it.
If I remember correctly we bleed a bit easier when we're pregnant, and some of us just cough up blood when we have a bad chest, but do show each Dr you see the photos.

If you usually have asthma, ask them if they might give you some montelukast (only thing that seems to help when I get something on my chest that makes me cough up blood!)

BollyKnickerz · 08/09/2025 23:22

The treatment would be blood thinners.

You'd need blood testing to see if you have a clotting disorder.

Chest infection doesn't usually result in bringing up blood.

TB is an exception. And lung abscesses. (Possibly much more unlikely)

3pears · 08/09/2025 23:26

Do you think it isn’t pneumonia? I hope you feel better soon, it sounds awful

justasking111 · 08/09/2025 23:30

Sorry you're so poorly. My DH had pleurisy a few years ago. It's a nasty infection.

Whyjustwhy83 · 08/09/2025 23:57

BitOutOfPractice thank you unfortunately I don't as ward still very noisy.

whatisheupto thank you, I've been doing my best not to bother the staff. I said nothing when I was left sitting for hrs without being seen. I've only begun to speak up as I've been told so many different things.

Idontknownowwhat it maybe pneumonia but no Dr even mentioned it and I'm the opposite I clot when I'm pregnant. I was on aspirin with my first and blood thinning injections throughout 2nd pregnancy. My mother also had a fair few clots starting around my age. The first Dr I saw was fairly certain it was a clot and if I couldn't have the scan was sending me home on blood thinners. I've had asthma in the past but haven't needed inhalers in years I'll ask about montelukast tomorrow

BollyKnickerz my CP blood test was elevated I think that's what the Dr said but not sure, white blood cell wasn't elevated. I don't know if they did any cloting test, tbh once I saw my x-ray and the state of my left lung I didn't really take the rest of the test results in. I was thinking mass and that is a possibility but I'd need the cat scan and don't think they want to do one. I was also told I would be given blood thinners along with antibiotics and that's not happened and told to stop aspirin too.

3pears I've never had either before but I didn't think so I've had my chest checked multiple times and it's been clear every time. My sats are 97/98 I can't take a deep breath and it feels so tight all the way round, when I'm walking though I'm gasping for air and get heart palpitations.

hope they are able to get to the bottom of it and the treatment is quick and effective so you feel better soon! <3

TheSixthBestOption · 09/09/2025 06:49

I hope you managed to get a bit of sleep. Hospitals are the worst places to recover! I would be asking lots of questions when you see the doctor in the morning. Ask them to justify why no blood thinners and antibiotics when this is what you were told you needed. Ask about pulmonary embolism. Explain about your mum and ask if you need testing for a clotting disorder. Have they given you support socks? If youre lying in bed all day and have a tendency to clot I would suggest support sticking to reduce risk of DVT, especially when pregnant.

Hope you get some answers soon.

Whyjustwhy83 · 09/09/2025 07:58

TheSixthBestOption. No sadly I've hardly slept, I've had a 2nd lot of antibiotics and may get a scan today. I will be asking all these questions when I get to see a Dr. I don't understand them not wanting me on thinners with my history. Also I know it's not a diagnosistic test but I've been having my sugars monitored and HCP and she says levels are fine and they aren't. Unless of course they've changed what levels are classed as high, as 5.8 is for first test before eating is high. I brought up blood through the night when the nurse came in checked and hadn't known that was why I came in and told me to keep an eye on it

I pneumonia and blood clots in my legs.

OH you poor lass,😞

Whyjustwhy83 · 09/09/2025 22:52

I'm still in hospital DVT in one leg and the other is a superficial clot. Chest pain died off after starting IV antibiotics but I've only had 2 doses, 3rd stopped so I I could go for a scan. When I came back and nurse restarted the cannula and it failed .
They decided to change to oral but then never give me any. The staff have been awful on the day shift, no one answered my buzzer, ignored me when I went out and asked for help for another patient. After waiting hrs to be discharged and get meds(which hasn't happened) the nurse ignored me and mimicked the patient she'd been with. Another staff member who had been lovely and helped when they were on my ward, said the staff were lazy today, they'd never stopped as all standing around chatting they and called them lazy bastard's.
I feel asleep waiting to be discharged and woke up feeling ill and the pain was back and my breathing was tight again, I'm being kept in to be monitored and started back on antibiotics thankfully and had some blood thinners.
