5 year old severe headache?

How long would you wait to see if it improves before ringing GP/111?

DD had a high temp yesterday, started complaining that her head hurts and so do her eyes, then she vomited yesterday too.
Have been giving 10ml calpol regularly but she’s saying the medicine isn’t helping her headache.

Today she on the sofa saying her head is hurting, she said she hungry but her head hurts to move/sit up.

im a bit of a worrier so i don’t know if its ‘just a headache’ or whether i should be concerned with how sore shes saying it is after two days? She’s been drinking fluids and resting. She feels a little cooler now but head pain isn’t getting any better.

Is the light bothering her eyes?
I think at this young age with the temperature I would go to the doctors.

Asap, ring 111 now
Just because of her age I wouldn’t leave it

Streatfeild · 08/09/2025 12:26

If it's not improving with calpol I would do it now.

id be straight on the phone to 111. Headache + temp + vomiting is something I wouldn’t mess with

Obsesetits · 08/09/2025 12:31

Thanks for the speedy reply. She’s cooler today, feels a bit warm to touch but thermometer says no high temp now. She also only vomited once yesterday and nothing since.

internet obviously says scary things like meningitis, but says she would be persistently vomiting and have a high temp?

I know if I ring 111 they like to see them regardless so I want to make sure I’m making the right call.

My DS4 had similar last winter.
We called 111 who were happy his neck wasn't sore (he could easily tuck his chin to his chest) and advised we continued with the calpol.
Definitely worth giving them a call

Devilsmommy · 08/09/2025 12:41

I don't want to worry you but my sister when she was a child had meningitis and she wasn't constantly vomiting, she just had the blinding headache and light sensitivity. Ring 111 asap because she needs to be seen. I hope it's nothing serious and she gets better soon

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 08/09/2025 12:43

You do need to get your daughter seen by a doctor. Please ring 111.

I think all doctors would rather see a 5 year old with “just a headache” than end up with a 5 year old in PICU with meningitis.

As an adult, of you had a severe, debilitating headache for 2 days that paracetamol wasn’t touching, had been vomiting and had a fever wouldn’t you consider calling the dr or 111 for advice first yourself? A headache with no respite is horrendous.

Maybe your daughter has a migraine? I’m not sure what age they can start from, but I’m sure children do suffer.

Rosieposy89 · 08/09/2025 13:01

I'd be straight on the phone. It's not normal if pain relief isn't helping. Better to be safe than sorry. Hope she's better soon

HannahHamptonsGloves · 08/09/2025 13:04

I am usually very much 'it's just a virus, they'll be fine' but with these symptoms I would call 111 or my GP surgery to get their view. It probably is just a virus, that's the most likely scenario, but I would want to have a medical professional's opinion.

winnieanddaisy · 08/09/2025 13:58

I once had viral meningitis with a sore throat, headache but no vomiting . I was in hospital for a week or so and under the weather for a couple of months . No anti-virals in those days . It could be a possibility. I wish her well .

x2boys · 08/09/2025 14:05

Hopefully it's just a virus but i would also call 111,it's best not to take the risk with small children.
