6yo eye rolling …

My son rolls his eyes upwards in a peculiar way at certain times - if I ask him a question he often does it, if I ask him to come to me he does it.

It’s not in a rude teenage eye rolling way, just his eyes look upwards for a few seconds.

I’m wondering whether he’s trying to avoid eye contact which can be good under his terms but he’s not overly keen on eye contact.

He might be autistic but has had a really good summer and I thought lots of previous traits were less obvious over the summer holiday.

Sometimes some people when asked a question look up, as if trying to literally see into their brain to find the answer. Hard to describe. Could this be what is happening?

Thunderclapped · 07/09/2025 21:09

Maybe, it’s not really like anything I’ve seen other people do though. It’s sometimes accompanied by a little purr like growl at the back of his throat.
But really it’s difficult to put my finger on what it really is.

Like a tic perhaps?

Like a tic perhaps?

Yes, maybe. But only during interactions.

We had this, it was a tic and it disappeared over time (replaced with a different one). Remarking on it makes it worse.

TinglyandCurious · 07/09/2025 21:34

Sounds like a tic. My nearly 5 year old develops tics sometimes. We ignore totally and they usually pass within a few weeks.

Ah okay, I agree, it sounds like a tic.
