How many siblings did you have and how many DC do you have

Just curious really, survey style. How many siblings did you have growing up/what number sibling were you, and how many DC did you end up having or not having? (Or would have liked)

I'm youngest of 3 and have 2 DC and would like a 3rd. I know a few families of 3 where the eldest then stopped at 1DC, the middle stopped at 2 DC and the 3rd had or wanted 3! I'm interested in how kids experience different size family dynamics!

I have 1 older brother and 2 children.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 06/09/2025 22:08

1 sibling and have 2 kids, so same family size. DH was one of three and adamant that he didn’t want a third.

WingingIt09 · 06/09/2025 22:09

I’m the middle of 3 and my husband is the youngest of 3; we have 3 children. We both always said we wanted 3. 3 of our siblings only have 1 child each (no particular link to birth order - one is an oldest sibling, one middle and one youngest). The other oldest sibling has 2.

Eldest of 4 and only girl. Stopped at 1.

Wow, I wonder what was that like…

Both me and dh are youngest of three (I had two older sisters, he had two older brothers). We only have one dc.

Anon501178 · 06/09/2025 22:10

Me only child, DH one of 4.
I never wanted an only child as I disliked the experience.DH isn't close to his siblings, had a dysfunctional childhood and went without alot as his parents overstretched themselves.

We have had 2 (both girls) and probably won't have any more because as lovely as they are, they're hard work (not listening, fighting together etc) expensive, and also neither me or DH have a desperate desire for a boy (or twins!)

I’m an only child, my Husband has one sister and we only have one

stayathomer · 06/09/2025 22:11

3 siblings and I’ve 4 children

bookworm14 · 06/09/2025 22:13

I’m the eldest of 4 and stopped at one child myself. Not because I had a bad experience as one of 4; I just didn’t want any more kids.

ThomasinaHoskins · 06/09/2025 22:15

No siblings, 1 DD, no intention to have any more.

I have three children and they are amazing human beings 🥰

MonGrainDeSel · 06/09/2025 22:17

I'm the eldest of four and just have one child. I would have liked more but it wasn't possible.

billycat321 · 06/09/2025 22:18

My parents both came from families of nine and I have at least 27 cousins
I am one of five and my 3 children have eleven cousins

ResusciAnnie · 06/09/2025 22:19

Me and DH are both youngest of 2, we’ve got 3 kids.

I know a lot of people who do the opposite to their parents. People who were one of 5 and have only 1 child etc.

I also know a lot of people who replicate their own childhood set up.

I don’t think there’s a pattern! I’ve thought of it a fair amount over the years 😄

OkPedro · 06/09/2025 22:19

Six siblings.. I am the youngest. I have two children. I knew when pregnant with the 2nd that I'd have no more.

Catsinaflat · 06/09/2025 22:20

I had 1 half brother who was 22 years older than me but I did not grow up with him nor did I know he was my brother until I was about 10. I have 3 children.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/09/2025 22:22

I was the 2nd of 4, 3 x G, 1 x B.
Have 2 dds, now adult. One has 3dcs, other has none, from choice.

JudyP · 06/09/2025 22:24

I have a theory that if you were happy as a child you replicate that ( roughly) in your own family, finances allowing - my husband and I both have one sibling and we were happy to have 2 kids. My dad was the second oldest of 8 and hated it and when my mum wanted 3 or 4 ( she had a happy childhood with 4 siblings) my dad said he couldn’t stand to have a household that big/busy with never enough time/ money etc. so they had 2! And my dads siblings that were a similar age to him all had 2 kids but the younger 3 each had 4 kids but they openly admit they cannot remember that hectic life when all 8 lived at home, they remember life when the older 3 or 4 had moved out and came back occasionally for Sunday lunch - what do you think?

EdnaBeveridge · 06/09/2025 22:27

Only child
1 Son
1 Daughter
Long term fostered my Nephew from the age of 12 until he joined the RAF at 19

TwoBlueFish · 06/09/2025 22:29

Grew up with 2 full siblings and 2 half siblings at home and then another half sibling and 2 step siblings who I saw when I visited my Dad. I have 2 kids which is what I wanted.

Peanutssuck · 06/09/2025 22:31

I'm the youngest of 5, my eldest DC is the eldest of 7, and my younger 3 DC are the youngest of 5

BeetlebumShesAGun · 06/09/2025 22:32

Only child (half sister and brother who were born when I was 15 and 17, have a good relationship with my sister. don't speak to my brother)

I have 3 children. I was adamant I would only have one, having witnessed lots of sibling rivalry. DH has one sister. He pushed for a sibling for DD, then there was a gap of 8 years between DD2 and DS! I was totally unprepared for how much I would love the whole pregnancy, baby, toddler experience and now I wish we had had lots more without the age gap! I love seeing the bond between my children.

maudelovesharold · 06/09/2025 22:33

I’m an only child, dh has 4 siblings, we have 3 dc. We’d probably have had another, if we’d started younger - I was 45 when I had no. 3!

Rituelec · 06/09/2025 22:34
