Not the worst day of my life of course, but in terms of my least favourite day of the year, that takes No1 spot.

The waiting!

Will it pass? If it doesnt how much will it cost? And of course, despite you getting it there shortly before cock crow, the call never comes before last thing in the afternoon. If you have no tech knowledge, how can you be sure that they garage isnt trying to rip you off (although I now use the local council test centre that doesnt do repairs now, and oddly enough they seem to fail cars far less than other repair garages do)

I was on tenterhooks all day today (yes, it was today) because although I didnt think there were any issues, I also didnt think there were any issues with my old car, which turned out to have utterly fucked suspension to the point where it was cheaper to write it off.

I just find it so fucking stressful, perhaps being on a low income contributes, but even when I was doing well I still hated MOT day!

My dad always says I should do this, but I cant afford it. Just have to take my chances!

Yep, one of the worst days of the year…

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 06/09/2025 00:14

Yes. My old car s MOT was late November. Horrible time just before Christmas and if it needed work was expensive (mercedes) and left me waiting for the bus home from work on cold dark nights.

Newer car has MOT in July (passed thank God) so not so bad.

I have a ritual where I drop car at the garage and go and have a coffee in a nearby cafe while I wait.

It's honestly like waiting for a call about a sick relative in hospital. I always feel sick and go to the loo loads.

Vies with open evening and ofsted (work in a school) as worst day of the year.

Also a day I really miss my dad still being here as he always used to ring me and ask about it and we would go into detail about it.
Nobody else in my family is very interested in cars.

I feel your pain. I take mine to a really shabby MOT place where all the taxi drivers take their cars. Reason being, they don't do repairs there, only MOTs so there is no incentive to fail your car, as no money to be made from your repairs. Kwik Fit once failed my car, told me I needed new brake pads and discs, plus another advisory, took it to this place (without doing any repairs) and it passed with no advisories. So unfortunately, yes, some places will definitely try to rip you off.

PeonyBulb · 06/09/2025 00:42

I had mine done the other day

I just hate having to take the time out to take it there, wait it for it to pass or fail then go and pick it up.

mine failed on something very cheap and minor then passed the same day after it got sorted out

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/09/2025 00:44

And the tremble in your voice when you ask "Any advisories"? ....

PyongyangKipperbang · 06/09/2025 00:46

To be honest, after my old car failed so catastrophically, advisories dont bother me anymore!

And *waiting for a call about a sick relative" is absolutely right! It really is!

No. Have a 17 year old hybrid Lexus. She hasn’t let me down yet.

I gave up cars and driving two years ago. It is utterly joy to no longer have heart attacks at the garage.
