What is the strongest Ikea bookcase?

Looking for a new bookcase or two. We have Billy bookcases that have been brilliant, but they are about 20 years old.

Are the new ones as strong?

Any recommendations would be great!

Billy and hemnes are solid if put up properly.

Think most ikea stuff well made

I have had a set of Hemnes for over 20 years and 4 house moves. Used to store books too so loaded down - sounds obvious but many bookcases can’t sustain the weight of a shelf of actual books and they end up bowed. No issues with Hemnes at all.

We have newer Billy and Hemnes, bought just a couple of years ago. Both massively overloaded and appear just as solid as old ones we left in a previous house.

I bought my Billy bookcases for my first house in 1989. They've survived several house moves and are still perfect. Not sure how good the newer versions are though.

We got new ones and they seem just as sturdy as the ones we already have from 15 years ago. But obviously I haven't had ten years to test them. The back actually has a big impact on the strength/longevity of the bookshelf even though it's so flimsy looking so gluing it really well into place as well as hammering the nails in apparently helps to extend the (ahem) shelf life of that helps!

Namitynamename · 06/09/2025 01:18

Sorry, I should have specified the new and 15 years old ones were both Billy bookcases. The material they are made of doesn't seem to have discernable changed in that time period.

I’ve used Billy in my bookshop business for years. The shelves are full and each carry several kilos in weight. I find them very strong.

BellissimoGecko · 06/09/2025 06:15

Brilliant, thanks. More Billy, then!

We have the hemnes ones and they are bulletproof.

ForeverAndEverCheese · 18/01/2026 18:46

I’m have had Hemnes for over 20 years and four house moves! They’re solid wood so don’t bow when loaded with books as most other bookshelves seem to do.
