How do I know what I weigh?!

Ok ridiculous but I weighed myself this evening on the scales in the en suite - said I was 11.7. My husband asked me if I’d mind popping the scales in the main bathroom so he could weigh himself after a bath. Fine! For no reason I checked again and this time they said 12.1?! About 3 minutes apart! So as a joke I said oh I wonder what I’ll weigh in the children’s bathroom - took them upstairs, 11.1?! I can’t be 11.1, 11.7 and 12.1 so what do I weigh?! Same scales but different rooms?? I’m so confused and frustrated! Flooring is similar in all bathrooms, no carpet or anything in any of them. I was wearing exact same thing as all three checks were within minutes! How do I know what weigh?!

Get yourself weighed on one of those machines in Boots.
Why on earth have you got so many bathrooms scales?

Iamthemoom · 04/09/2025 20:01

I had this with my old scales. I bought new ones but I now always weigh myself in exactly the same spot. I think different floors can affect scales, how level they are etc but also the scales could be faulty.

Sorry but did you really need to post this? Its quite obvious there's something wrong with the scales.

Um I’d buy some good quality scales to be honest.

MiniCoopers · 04/09/2025 20:05

Depends on the type of floor, tiles, vinyl, carpet?

FurForksSake · 04/09/2025 20:05

Do you have any weights that are labelled? You could weigh those in each location and see the difference?

but get new scales or go to boots.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/09/2025 20:08

Get a plank of wood and place a fulcrum in the middle and stand on one end, then get your husband to put bags of sugar / flour on the opposite end. When the plank is evenly balanced, add up the weight of each bag and voila! you will know your weight.
It's what I do.

Alternatively go to a fairground and seek out the 'I Guess Your Weight' man. They are usually pretty accurate - in my experience.

NewLifter · 04/09/2025 20:11

Obviously you go with the lowest weight, always!

15minutesaday · 04/09/2025 20:13

Moving the scales around can destabilise the measuring mechanisms/pressure plates.

AmpleLilacQuail · 04/09/2025 20:15

I tend to get different results on my scales even in the same bathroom, so I have to shift them around a few times to confirm!

DiscoBob · 04/09/2025 20:16

If the floor is soft it makes you look like you weigh less.

Always weigh yourself naked, after a BM but before eating or drinking, first thing in the morning. And don't do it more than a couple times a week.

If you are unsure, check it doesn't need a new battery, and is calibrated. Then weigh yourself several times, and take the average.

whimsicallyprickly · 04/09/2025 20:19

Scales on hard floor
Don't move them around
Weigh naked after BM first thing in the morning before food and coffee/tea

If after all that ^ your scales is weighing weirdly.....buy new scales!

she was carrying one set between rooms 😊

YYYDlilah · 04/09/2025 20:24

Should have read it properly but I was distracted by all the bathrooms.

It doesn't matter what you weigh at home. When you get weighed at the doctor's it will always be more.
Edited for typo.

I agree. Drives me nuts. I always wear slip off shoes and super light clothing but still, I weigh more at the Docs 🙄

littlemousebigcheese · 04/09/2025 20:28

sorry if it’s confusing, only one set of scales, different bathrooms! all the bathrooms have the same hard tiles floors so I’m really confused. I’ll ask dr to weigh me next time I’m there

I find the same thing happens.

I have always lived in older quirky properties so perhaps scales are only consistent in new places with straighter floors?

I keep my scales in one spot now and can still get three slightly different weights if I get on and off.

I tried several sets, had three at once at one point.

Tried using a heavy set weight (big sack of cat litter!) to make sure they are accurate and all seemed fine but for a human amount all my scales still varied.

Presumably because my weight is over two points of contact rather than one.

I weigh three times and take the middle weight now.

sorry, but did you really need to post this response? It’s rude and dismissive.

OP - my scales do this too. I just don’t move them anymore, i have now picked the area where I weigh the least and I’m never moving them again 😁

I've come to this conclusion too. I've started weighing myself standing on one foot. Good for balance too

littlemousebigcheese · 05/09/2025 10:38

I’m going to believe that I weigh 11.1 and leave the scales there 😂 thanks everyone, glad it’s not just me and my scales! Do have one more bathroom so could give that a quick go and see if I get a full house of rando figures!

Does it matter?

Scales are a poor indicator of health and body composition and any individual measurement is only accurate within a few pounds anyway.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 05/09/2025 11:59

Yer, well, gravity innit?

appleandx · 05/09/2025 12:12

Did you calibrate the scales first?
