What's the noise?

We've been living in our house for over a year now. We live near a church and are used to the bells and quarterly clock chimes and don't mind it a bit and it doesn't keep us awake.

Several times I've woken in the night to hear a noise like a music box going - the sort of noise you hear from one of those little boxes with a ballerina in. It sounds like it's in the house and only lasts a minute, if that. I'd kind of put it down to the fact that it was church bells I'd sleepily misheard so I've not said anything to anyone.

Last night my partner woke me up wandering around in the dark saying that he'd heard a noise like a music box and was trying to find where it was coming from.

We have completely renovated the house from roof to floorboards so know the place like the back of our hands. No music box to the best of our knowledge anywhere. Any idea what it could be? Is it the church? Is it a haunted music box? Are we both going crackers?

No idea but I can guarantee that it won’t be a haunting

Demonic entity, deffo.
Get an exorcist immediately, if that doesn’t work burn the house down.

HA! We practically live in the grave yard so we're absolutely not haunting type people. It's just such a puzzle.

Well you’ve started a thread asking about a haunted music box….

Is the grave yard still in use? I’ve seen people leave musical greetings cards on graves which I’d imagine would start and stop with the wind when the battery starts going

TillingMarket · 04/09/2025 14:08

The haunted music box was tongue in cheek.

@123ZYX Oh my goodness, you might be right. People do leave cards, ornaments and other things. That hadn't crossed my mind. I'll go for a wander when I get home.

Do you have children?

Norugratsatall · 04/09/2025 14:12

Have you tried following the noise at night? Checked the loft? Could it be wind chimes outside somewhere?

TillingMarket · 04/09/2025 14:34

Children both grown and in their own places now. I can't think we have any old musical toys stashed away.

My partner tried to follow the noise last night but no luck. We've had the loft apart during the renovations so we're pretty sure there's nothing up there that could be causing it. Wind chimes - good idea, will check it out but the noise is so rare, I'd have thought we'd hear it more often.

Do you have any appliances that play music? We’ve just moved and the washing machine in the kitchen plays Schubert when it’s finished! Any appliances on at night? Neighbour’s phone?

CaroleLandis · 04/09/2025 15:05

.

What's the noise?
TillingMarket · 04/09/2025 15:45

@24Dogcuddler I'm sure it's not appliances and we never hear any noise from our adjoining neighbour. (Very thick old walls). I suppose if she was in her garden we might hear it but it's during the night so I reckon not. Good ideas though.

@CaroleLandis Oh I bet that's it! Thank you. I knew MN would sort it.

Just read your thread, OP. Care to share what it was, if you actually found the source?

Biscuits4 · 01/02/2026 14:57

No idea what it could be. Do you know if it's roughly at the same time?
