Squares or triangles???

I'm talking about sandwiches that you make yourself - in an effort to cut costs, and because I've suddenly started to get really hungry at lunchtime, have started to bring a sandwich to work. I get two frozen slices of bread out first thing, butter and fill them, put together then put in a bag (whole) and take to work. When lunchtime arrives, they go on a plate and I cut them into 4 but I always do triangles because somehow it makes the now 4 sandwiches seem bigger than if they are cut into squares!!!
Does anyone else have this 'logic'? Is there a scientific reason for it?

My dad does that, but I'm firmly squares or preferable two rectangles.

LittleGreenDuck · 04/09/2025 14:13

Triangles gives you more sandwich. I don't know how, but it does. Don't question the physics.

Normally have two rectangles but if I am going to cut them then it is triangles. No idea why.

triangles - the crust to middle of bread ratio is better that way

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 04/09/2025 14:19

See I feel that triangles gives you more crust and less sandwich.

EffectivelyDecluttering · 04/09/2025 14:20

Two rectangles, but it all goes down the same way.

Because there is one side of crust and 2 sides of the middle of the sandwich, for each triangle (when you cut into 4 triangles that is).

Makes me feel like I've got more sandwich because there appears to be less crust.

It's an illusion!

When my mum made a bacon butty she always cut it into 4 little squares. 4 little squares of deliciousness

Perfect reply.

I like a triangular sandwich. The only sandwich I cut into squares is grated cheese, as it is less likely to disassemble itself.

Phew - I can now tell my son (27!) that his mother is not bonkers and that I'm not the only one to believe that triangles give a better sandwich Grin. Thanks Mumsnet!!

Sandwiches should be cut into triangles unless it’s a bacon sandwich which should be rectangles.

ElsaSnow · 04/09/2025 15:12

Triangles if it’s going on a plate for me. If it’s for dd’s packed lunch it’s 4 squares with crusts off so it fits in the Tupperware 🤣

Arlanymor · 04/09/2025 15:14

Triangles - they are a stronger structural shape and as such make better sandwiches as they hold together better. Plus in fours because they are easier to hold that way.

QED!

Sandwiches should be cut into triangles unless it’s a bacon sandwich which should be rectangles.

or fish-finger sandwiches (cut along the length of the finger, so you have two whole ones on each half)

If you cut a sandwich into 2 triangles and eat the crusts first, it feels as though you still have a fair chunk of sandwich in your hand. Do it with rectangles and you're left with a few crumbs. Trust sandwich geometry.

Nellieinthebarn · 04/09/2025 15:21

Triangles fit in your mouth better, and they taste nicer for some reason. I cut all sandwiches into triangles, except bacon butties, they have to be 2 oblongs, I don't know why, they just do.

MizzeryGuts · 04/09/2025 15:23

Triangles!
So you can hold the crusty edge and bite into pure sandwich

ObliviousCoalmine · 04/09/2025 15:29

Triangles. I’m not a monster.
