Jobs you can only hold in London

At dinner tonight we got to discuss if there are any jobs you can ONLY hold in London

So say manager of the Shard doesnt count as you can be a building manager elsewhere

You can be mayor of another city so again doesn't count

We are looking specifically for a job that cannot exist in a slightly different form in another place.

So far we have

Yeomen Warders (beefeaters)

Speaker of the house

Are there others?

Turns out there ia a subreddit. Called unique london jobs.

Only ones we havent got are

Gas lighter at St James
Wimbledon ball boy. Dh has to give that one as it has to be from specific primary schools.

I was about to suggest the gaslighter. When i was a very new and homesick young person in London I remember gloomily watching one of them at work…

London Metal Exchange I think requires some actual office days … possibly some other trader roles @Enko

This has caused quite a debate in the house and we are split 2/2 as to if it counts..

I’m pretty sure Mi6 and Mi5 have people elsewhere in the country -otherwise all the terrorists would just move up North!!

I cheated and ask ChatGP - Garter Principal King of Arms
Chief herald of England, based in the College of Arms, London.
Designs and grants coats of arms under the authority of the Crown.
No other country has a heraldic authority structured quite like this.
The title, duties, and historical basis are unique to England — and based only in London.

Pie and mash/jellied eel café/shop owner or worker. You technically could open a pie and mash shop elsewhere but I doubt that your business would last long. No call for it.

Now everybody going to tell me about thriving pie and mash shops they've visted in Bangkok, Milan, Buenos Aires, San Francisco...

I used to live near one in Essex (not Greater London style Essex,) for 20 years, so they were successful. Town with lots of ex-pat Londoners though.

City of London police officer

Almost no jobs only exist in London. It's a lie people tell themselves to justify why they 'have' to live there.

If you were a black cab driver in London and want to live elsewhere, you can drive taxis anywhere.

Likewise lawyer, flood engineer, media, banker etc. All these jobs exist in other cities, Channel 4 is based in Leeds for example and there's TV production, theatre, arts etc everywhere. There's also this thing called transferable skills.

But if you were a police officer in London and wanted to move elsewhere, you could join another police force.

There's nothing unique about the City of London Police that means that those police officers cannot work for other forces.

I work in an industry that is predominantly based in London - that is, if you want access to the greatest number of employers in this sector to aid career progression, you need to be in (or near) London. I could get a job elsewhere. But if that job ran its course I’d be stuck. Job, yes. Career, no.

It’s not a benefit as far as I’m concerned! And would be the biggest reason why I wouldn’t encourage people to work in this industry.

Governor of the Bank of England.

Oh I forgot about Glasgow's underground. Apparently it's one line that just goes in a circle !

Yes it.is just a circular it isn't the same as the London underground.

Can you stay on it all day and go round and round?
You can't do that on the London Circle Line anymore because they gave it a tail.

There is an all day ticket so I suppose you could if you wanted to.

No, there are black cabs in many cities.

Special Effects director at the Globe Theatre, there can't be many places using Elizabethan stage effects.

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford might be one of the few that does.

No I know but if you’re a City of London police officer, employed by them then that’s not transferable. Of course you can leave and join a different force (service?) but you can’t be a City of London officer elsewhere.

BitOutOfPractice · 04/09/2025 14:11

Pearly king or queen?

AdaColeman · 04/09/2025 15:01

katmarie · 04/09/2025 13:53

Well, possibly, though The Globe has no lighting rig or sound system, unlike the Stratford theatre. This means that the stage effects at The Globe are all things like wooden clappers to imitate hoof beats, or ball bearings rolling on a drum and a flexible metal sheet with a canvas covered wheel to recreate a thunder storm. I'm not sure that the Stratford theatre uses those regularly, they are more likely to use modern technology I think.

Governor of the Bank of England.

If you are Governor of the Bank of England, you can also be Prime Minister of Canada, which doesn't strictly fit this brief, but kind of wriggles around it.

Globules · 04/09/2025 19:25

Comptroller of the household

Laurmolonlabe · 04/09/2025 21:35

I make costumes for stage and screen,l could have lived elsewhere but l wouldn't have had a career as a freelance maker.

Why do you have to be in London for that though?
Surely clothing can be made literally anywhere?

Laurmolonlabe · 04/09/2025 21:47

You have to be within proximity of the actors or the costumes can't be fitted properly -the furthest away practically is around Brighton.
