Jobs you can only hold in London

At dinner tonight we got to discuss if there are any jobs you can ONLY hold in London

So say manager of the Shard doesnt count as you can be a building manager elsewhere

You can be mayor of another city so again doesn't count

We are looking specifically for a job that cannot exist in a slightly different form in another place.

So far we have

Yeomen Warders (beefeaters)

Speaker of the house

Are there others?

They don’t have operators! That’s the point of the train!

There are pie and mash shops elsewhere bar London

This has caused quite a debate in the house and we are split 2/2 as to if it counts..

If you’re saying anywhere in the whole world then pretty much none.

Archbishop of Canterbury has their formal residence in London and is a different role to other archbishops.

But you are making the parameters so tight that basically you are asking why do we have in London that we don’t have anywhere else. Soldiers with funny hats- no. Prime minister- no, tower with guards- no, tubes - no, river with boats- no, Crown Jewels- no. Basically you are looking for a unicorn that only exists in London and nowhere else in the world. That’s not going to happen in London or any other big city as our technology and globalisation means we all have similar things, and therefore similar workers.

Oh right. Well, I work in an industry that is (in the Uk) predominantly based in London. As in, there are some companies scattered about the country but if you want a career with plenty of job opportunities to progress, you have to be based in London.

On that basis, I wouldn’t recommend it! It’s not that well paid but you’re tied to a bloody expensive city to do it, in the main.

Groundsman at Chelsea football club or West Ham, Tottenham, Arsenal, Charlton, QPR, Crystal Palace

The actual ravens are the ones who have to stay put.

He’s right, London is not the centre of the world…all jobs held in London will be held elsewhere in the uk and world.

Also the Resident Governor of the Tower of London, who participates in the Ceremony of the Keys, which I don’t think is done anywhere else so it’s a unique job.
