Jobs you can only hold in London

At dinner tonight we got to discuss if there are any jobs you can ONLY hold in London

So say manager of the Shard doesnt count as you can be a building manager elsewhere

You can be mayor of another city so again doesn't count

We are looking specifically for a job that cannot exist in a slightly different form in another place.

So far we have

Yeomen Warders (beefeaters)

Speaker of the house

Are there others?

But all of those jobs would exist in New York and Paris too wouldn't they

cross posted with my edit, yep I see now

The people that run the cable cars across the Thames.
Nowhere else in the UK has cable cars do they?
Edit : actually I vaguely remember going on a cable car in some tourist place. In Derbyshire maybe? It was in the 80s.

Oh yes they do. Matlock, Derbyshire for starters.

A lot of public affairs roles are only London based because you need easy access to Westminster.

I think OP meant specific roles that are only possible in London, like a trivia question, rather than careers which are largely based in London.

But for what it’s worth the head of public affairs in my organisation lives snd works in Norfolk (though they do travel to London frequently).

ImAPreMadonna · 03/09/2025 20:31

Cable cars up in the Highlands for skiing and the like @Needmorelego

I'm impressed I remembered it was Derbyshire.

Circle line tube driver. Or any tube driver really despite the fact some stations are in Essex/Bucks. You'd need to go into London for a percentage of your day at least.

Those city traders that shout down telephones and wear brightly coloured jackets. But maybe that's something that died in the 90s?

London tour guide. Though I guess you could be a tour guide elsewhere.

Glamorous24 · 03/09/2025 20:32

Specific jobs for specific companies who have their HQs in London - particularly media, creative industries - film, TV, publishing, music, fashion.

many will have counterparts or similar roles in other major cities of the world - but often particular roles in particular
places.

Needmorelego · 03/09/2025 20:33

I don't think there's anything 🤔

roundaboutthehillsareshining · 03/09/2025 20:34

Anyone who works for any of the London universities? UCL would have a weird name if it was uprooted and moved to Burnley?

ACynicalDad · 03/09/2025 20:34

Ambassador to the Court of St James.

corlan · 03/09/2025 20:35

Swan upper

But they could that job anywhere! Ie at Sheffield Hallam University!

tinytemper66 · 03/09/2025 20:37

Tube driver?

Needmorelego · 03/09/2025 20:37

The Tower of London ravens.
They could go off and be ravens anywhere but if they leave the Tower then the UK will crumble...or whatever the legend is.
So the ravens HAVE to stay because they can't protect the country anywhere else.
There. That's it. Ravens 😂😂

You can work for a university anywhere in the world.

I too wondered about the Keeper of the Swans but they have to go out to Sunbury which isn’t technically London.

Judellie · 03/09/2025 20:37

Actually the Tyne and Wearmetro in Newcastle/Sunderland has underground tube drivers too, not just London and Glasgow.
The people who maintain Big Ben? Do other cities have famous clocks?

bunnypenny · 03/09/2025 20:37

OP it’s v weird that nearly everyone hasn’t read your question properly….

Keeper of the Crown Jewels

and probably some other linked to royalty and military - such as Beefeaters. Are there worldwide equivalents of beefeater?!

I thik Big Ben keeper is one we have to say is only in London

@bunnypenny keeper of the crown jewels is a good one..

This by the way all came out because ds stated he hates London and you can do any job elsewhere... i want to prove him wrong.

Except someone else would have that job at Sheffield Hallam. So to be, for example, Head of Quality and Standards at UCL, requires you to be accessible to London. If you're Head of Q&S at Sheffield Hallam, you're doing a different job that can only be done accessible to Sheffield....

Needmorelego · 03/09/2025 20:42

@Enko the Crown Jewels were apparently moved to Windsor in WW2 so I'm afraid that's not a London only job.

cornflourblue · 03/09/2025 20:42

Would working for MI5/MI6 count? Guess you can be a spy for any country.

Redheadedstepchild · 03/09/2025 20:44

Pie and mash/jellied eel café/shop owner or worker. You technically could open a pie and mash shop elsewhere but I doubt that your business would last long. No call for it.

Now everybody going to tell me about thriving pie and mash shops they've visted in Bangkok, Milan, Buenos Aires, San Francisco...

CalliopePlantain · 03/09/2025 20:44

DLR operator
