Triple whammy 😫

So 52 years old and no fillings and every annual dental check up involves me walking out smugly after being told my teeth are excellent - wonky - but in perfect health.

Today though, I got told an upper end tooth has decayed to point of requiring extraction, another requires a filling and yet another (!) is fractured and needs a composite protectant.

Oh my…just reeling…with no IRL shoulder to cry on, please tell me anything to make me feel better?!

I've got 13 composite fillings in my top teeth, three in the bottom plus a silver crown.

I don't see it as a bad thing. I see it as good that I've had my teeth fixed and now they're healthy and better than new! So try and see it in a positive way. You need it doing and once you do they'll be healthy and strong.

It's very unusual to get to your age and not have any need for a filling. Wear and tear alone creates damage to even the most well cared for gnashers. 😀

Aww, thank you for your reply! Just what I needed, yes I should be looking at is a positive that there is a way forward. Just got stuck frozen in shock and pity for myself 🙃

My pleasure. Honestly don't worry. Be pleased you've gone this long without needing any! X

Eeek! Good luck - hope it’s not bad news!

My teeth have never been great but I've had a time recently. I lost a wisdom tooth which meant my front ones moved. Another wisdom tooth I will lose eventually. I've got a recording gum on one tooth and I was feeling really down about it.

But I went to a dental hygienist who was brilliant. My teeth whilst not good are not as bad as I thought. He's given me a filling to help make the tooth look better and topped up two teeth that had chipped.

It's a bugger though.

Wow! It’s great you got that far with no fillings. I’m 27 and haven’t had any yet, but I did chip one very badly during freshers week at uni so it had to be capped, I was devastated. I was so scared my flatmate (who I’d know for two days) had to hold my hand while I was in the chair.

Im glad you have a good dentist though and are feeling better about it 🙂

Welcome to the joys of menopause. Like you, no work needed on my teeth until I was in my early 50s. Now there’s a new thing every visit.

Hormone changes in pregnancy are well known to damage teeth (hence the free dental care). Turns out menopause does similar but no one cares about that, as far as I can tell.

Ah thank you! Yes tbh I think I just got lucky with good genes - and am also if I’m honest 😅 disappointed that I can no longer annoy people with my ‘did you know I haven’t got any - ‘ story whenever anyone mentions anything vaguely dental haha.

So you’re almost 30 without any fillings though so that’s good also as apparently most people have had one by their early 20s. May your good dental health continue - especially if you have such an aversion like me to the dreaded chair! 🙂

Oh gawd! Y’know I’m in peri right now and I did wonder if that was part of the reason I got 3 hits in such quick succession after zero issues previously.

Yes, you’re right - you just know if men experienced such a seismic shift in their biology, health policies may be different today 😕.
