Help me make my house smell nice

I open windows, wash curtains, clean the floors but it still smells.

Main problem being the rats, I clean them regularly but too much cleaning can make the problem worse. I can't use scented things in the room they are in either.

The cat also doesn't help, the food is the main issue but I've tried to counteract that with a self closing cat bowl so when it's not in use it keeps the food sealed.

The reed diffusers I have upstairs are horrible, I bought new oil from Amazon and I think I'm going to have to chuck it. Supposed to be orange and rhubarb, it smells of neither, just a fake strong smelling horribleness.

Any tips?

It is. It’s also a place where opinions can be challenged! That’s the beauty of public forums.

But why do people have to be sooo rude.

Ewww stinky boys! Rats are great pets but ive only ever had girls boys smell 😅

What's your cage based made of?

Please don't use diffusers with cats, the essential oils and other chemicals can cause irritation, respiratory issues and can be ingested if they lick it off their fur. They are really bad for them.

Rats make great pets, especially for kids. Honestly I dont think there's anything you can do about the smell. When the rats go and you chuck their cage, etc the smell will go also.

I’ve had pet rats and they really don’t stink. What do they smell of?

The bulk is a load of Coco Coir soil with leaf litter and spaghum moss because it has springtails and isopods in it to keep it mould free and they eat the leaf litter and the moss. I just have to keep it damp and turn it every so often to stop the build up of ammonia. I have several cork barks in there for the isopods to hide under.

So the smell is very earthy which I don't really like mixed in with a general rat smell. They love the base though, they make tunnels in it and because I scatter feed they have to dig for their food. Plus it saves me so much time, when they had the shavings it used to take me forever to change all of them, there is about 120l of the substrate so as you can imagine it was a big job! I actually think they smell less with the soil too, it's just that I don't like the smell of the soil 🙄

I've loved having them but I won't have any more, they are a lot more work than I anticipated (and the smell!)

I am actually, I am told I am hilarious. You however resort to insults. Not good form really is it?

I have guinea pigs in my daughter’s room. I bought an air purifier. Has made a big difference. I also spot clean twice a day(with a hoover). They have fabric bedding so I bought a laundry bag and deep clean twice a week, on 90 degrees with Dettol pet.

All of the above has made a difference .
