Do you think Autumn starts tomorrow?

Or does it start the 22nd September?
In which case Winter either starts December 1st or December 22nd too?

I know it depends on whether you are following the meteorological or astronomical calendar but I'm just interested as to what people think?

For me autumn starts tomorrow

3678194b · 31/08/2025 17:29

I would say tomorrow. But to me it seems to have already started in the last week or two.

LhudeSingCuccu · 31/08/2025 17:30

I associate September with Autumn, so yes. We’ve had a stonkingly good summer, but my beloved winter clothes are calling me. I keep buying jeans and jumpers.

Harrriet · 31/08/2025 17:30

Autumn for me starts when I need to wear a long sleeved top. Winter starts when I wear long jumpers and knee high boots.

Comedycook · 31/08/2025 17:30

No...I consider September summer. Absolutely hate autumn and winter...it's lasts so bloody long so I have to mentally tell myself it's still summer for as long as possible.

sundayfundayclub · 31/08/2025 17:36

I count September as Autumn so I guess so.

sundayfundayclub · 31/08/2025 17:37

But I don't tend to feel Autumnal until Oct. Still over 20 degrees & sunny so no need for jumpers and boots.

Same!

I don’t want summer to end and hate the dark mornings and nights

pizzaHeart · 31/08/2025 17:37

Tomorrow

sundayfundayclub · 31/08/2025 17:37

I also don't put pumpkin decorations up until the 31st of October...

YesTHATMum · 31/08/2025 17:38

I think it started last week when the temperatures dropped and I had to get my jeans out!

Needmorelego · 31/08/2025 17:38

It will start when I see my first conker laying on the pavement 🌰

I was at a National Trust place today. There were fallen conkers (but still in shells so do they count?) on the ground...

Seasons in terms of weather and nature don't fall into neat 3 month packages, the further north you go the longer the winters and shorter the summers. (In Norway there might only be 4 months between snow melting and new Snow arriving) and conversely the further south you go towards equator the shorter the winter season.
Here in Northern Scotland I would say autumn starts tomorrow, in fact it started last Monday noticeably cooler especially overnight, winter starts mid November to mid march spring until mid / end of may and summer June to August. This year has been much drier and warmer than average but the weather has definitely changed now : but it felt like summer started in May it was hot and dry all through exam period.

Crunchymum · 31/08/2025 17:42

As you say OP, if you use the meteorological calendar it's tomorrow. Astronomical calendar is 22nd September.

I use meteorological myself.

Although of course the weather doesn't seem to always play ball. We've had years when we've been in the sea (UK beach) in late October and other times we've had the heating on in June.

Just to add we don't live by the sea, I realise a lot of proper sea faring folk go in year round. I'm merely saying weather has been nice enough in late October to swim comfortably.

turkeyboots · 31/08/2025 17:44

In the Irish traditional seasons autumn started on 1 August. Which feels right to me.

wordywitch · 31/08/2025 17:44

I’m firmly in the 22 September camp. I’m the outlier in my family though, they all say tomorrow is the start of autumn. I don’t know if it’s a country-specific thing as I’m not originally from the UK.

Pricelessadvice · 31/08/2025 17:46

Yep, 1st September is autumn for me. I love it.

sundayfundayclub · 31/08/2025 17:47

But they teach that if does in schools don't they?

sundayfundayclub · 31/08/2025 17:47

it

booksareforlife · 31/08/2025 17:52

Summer's been awful this year (It's been horrific for my seasonal depression) so i'm ready for Autumn so for me bring it on it starts tomorrow.

I also feel weird the winter doesn't start until 21st December, for me November onwards is winter once the clocks go back

P00hsticks · 31/08/2025 17:53

I've never really understood people saying that summer starts on 21st/22nd June and Winter on 21st / 22nd December when they are the longest and shortest days of the year and known as Midsummer day and Midwinter day

Berlinlover · 31/08/2025 17:54

Well the nuns in school told me it starts 1 August so it starts 1 August.

YellowSubmarine994 · 31/08/2025 17:54

Yes, I go with calendar months rather than the equinox etc. for seasons as it's just so much simpler. I go with Sep-Nov is autumn, Dec-Feb is winter, Mar-May is spring and Jun-Aug is summer

OhNoNotSusan · 31/08/2025 17:54

surely it is 23rd september?
