Do you think Autumn starts tomorrow?

Wonderwoman333 · 31/08/2025 17:26

Or does it start the 22nd September?
In which case Winter either starts December 1st or December 22nd too?

I know it depends on whether you are following the meteorological or astronomical calendar but I'm just interested as to what people think?

22nd here and I don't switch summer to winter wardrobes or wear tights or socks until 1st October.

More correctly, I think the autumn equinox starts on 21st September; the winter equinox on 21st December, the spring equinox on 21st March and the summer equinox on 21st June. May be the 22nd. That's not to say there isn't an autumnal nip in the air in the early mornings and the days aren't shortening.

SomeOfTheTrouble · 31/08/2025 19:41

In terms of clothes, I start wearing tights etc when I’m cold enough to wear tights.

Readyforslippers · 31/08/2025 19:43

No, mid-late September is Autumn. It's still summer for a few weeks. We do quite often have a good start to September, though it's not looking good this year. Plants will be happy though!

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 31/08/2025 19:46

I determine purely when it starts to feel chilly. Well scientific me.

Ilovemyshed · 31/08/2025 19:49

Sept/Oct /Nov = Autumn
Dec/Jan/Feb = Winter
March/April/May = Spring
June/July/ August = Summer

I was at a National Trust place today. There were fallen conkers (but still in shells so do they count?) on the ground...

I need some of these to prevent the spiders which are already invading my house 🕷

Edited to add, clearly the spiders already think it's autumn, they must be as confused as the trees.

LilaGnat · 31/08/2025 19:58

What do I do with conkers to keep spiders at bay?

Saw a huge gigantonormous one in my chimney breast yesterday. Tried to catch it but it got away while I was getting a glass.

No...I consider September summer. Absolutely hate autumn and winter...it's lasts so bloody long so I have to mentally tell myself it's still summer for as long as possible.

Same here. But it is feeling distinctly autumnal now. The light has lost it's summerly quality and gone over to that crappy autumn/winter feel. And it's getting dark early too 😩I hate this time of year.

Carrotsurprise · 31/08/2025 20:21

The equinox way is weird. Why are June 22nd and December 22nd "mid"summer/"mid"winter day if that's also the start of that season?

afaloren · 31/08/2025 20:31

Tomorrow. To me the seasons are:

September, October, November are Autumn (best season)
December, January and February are Winter
March, April and May are Spring
June, July and August are Summer and the absolute pits

So I’m excited about tomorrow!

stclementine · 31/08/2025 20:36

I’m usually in the equinox/solstice camp for the seasons. However, a friend who’s a geographer states that it’s the 1st of the months and autumn is my favourite season so who am I to argue

Zempy · 31/08/2025 20:42

There are fallen bonkers all over the parks where I live (south coast) and it’s very rainy.

It will be autumn tomorrow for me.

Oh lol! That’s so funny!!

I must be conkers! 🤣

YesTHATMum · 31/08/2025 17:38

I think it started last week when the temperatures dropped and I had to get my jeans out!

I agree. Had to wear long sleeved tops last week myself.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 31/08/2025 20:55

Yep, I bloody love autumn and winter.
I’m definitely ready for it! 🍁🍁

intrepidpanda · 31/08/2025 21:01

If I had to pick a traditional standard, I would go astronomical
However people associate seasons with weather so strongly that we need a reset.
Traditional autumn weather doesn't really start until November and winter late January. More likely to get snow in March than December

Itstheshowgirl · 31/08/2025 21:02

Conkers on the ground already here my DC have started collecting them. Just waiting on the spiders.

I am generally a 22nd September person when it comes to Autumn because it usually feels like summer until then but this year it’s looking pretty cold for the next few weeks.

Wonderwoman333 · 31/08/2025 22:15

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, I am going with it being Autumn tomorrow.
Its my favourite season too so excited for it!
Not had any enormous spiders though yet thankfully.

That’s how I see the seasons too.

OhNoNotSusan · 01/09/2025 06:13

meteorologically it starts today

In the Irish traditional seasons autumn started on 1 August. Which feels right to me.

This makes sense to me. May June July usually feel summery and in August it starts getting dark.

But I’d generally say autumn starts in September without giving it a precise date. Just because that’s what I learnt at primary school I guess.

Vogt · 01/09/2025 06:44

In Ireland it's August. Caused confusion for ds when he started school in the UK and came home with September as the first autumn month.

StayALittleLonger · 01/09/2025 06:54

I always think of September 1st as being the start of Autumn. The weather has certainly got colder. I like Autumn, with Halloween to look forward to and Xmas just around the corner, it’s a nice time of year.

Autumn1990 · 01/09/2025 06:55

I go with the 21st September for start of autumn and 21st December for start of winter. We always get our harshest coldest weather after Christmas and spring doesn’t arrive until well into March, in fact the first part of March is cold and often snowy
