Do you think Autumn starts tomorrow?

Wonderwoman333 · 31/08/2025 17:26

Or does it start the 22nd September?
In which case Winter either starts December 1st or December 22nd too?

I know it depends on whether you are following the meteorological or astronomical calendar but I'm just interested as to what people think?

brown leaves are on the ground, the rain is like autumn

I was at a National Trust place today. There were fallen conkers (but still in shells so do they count?) on the ground...

Oh dear....so that's summer done then 😂😭

Magicpaintbrush · 31/08/2025 18:10

What is this madness? Everything is green and lush, there are flowers blooming everywhere - September is still Summer, you just have to look out of the window to see that. I will be squeezing every last drop out of Summer and then look forward to Autumn in October. Usually round here the very best week for brilliant Autumn colours, your red and gold trees, is actually the first week of November.

I've never really understood people saying that summer starts on 21st/22nd June and Winter on 21st / 22nd December when they are the longest and shortest days of the year and known as Midsummer day and Midwinter day

Good point 🤔

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 31/08/2025 18:11

Yes, I definitely think it starts tomorrow!

CeaselesslyIntoThePast · 31/08/2025 18:14

Never understood all these weird dates seasons start. Spring is 1st of March. Autumn is 1st of September. Each month lasts three months. Sorted !

Magicpaintbrush · 31/08/2025 18:14

I should amend my post to say I'm in the Southeast - might be different up North.

IDreamOfElectricSheep · 31/08/2025 18:15

I’m looking at the weather forecast and we’ve got temperatures in the 20’s still (25c next Monday!) so I’ll take it that it’s still summer.
It’s not Autumn if I don’t fancy soup.

ExitPursuedByABare · 31/08/2025 18:16

Hell no. Not until the autumnal equinox.

Magicpaintbrush · 31/08/2025 18:18

Also, a lot of trees that are already dropping their leaves are trying to conserve water because the weather has been so dry - they can't afford to lose water through their leaves if nothing is coming up from the roots so they drop them early.

sundayfundayclub · 31/08/2025 18:19

I also feel weird the winter doesn't start until 21st December, for me November onwards is winter once the clocks go back

Isn't that mid winter though?

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 31/08/2025 18:20

Equinox - 22nd.

Calendar months are quite arbitrary, man-made; equinoxes & solstices are immutable.

SomeOfTheTrouble · 31/08/2025 18:21

22nd for me.

ShesTheAlbatross · 31/08/2025 18:23

Yes - in my head it’s Sept/Oct/Nov for autumn.

Neither. I'm a gardener. I let nature tell me what it thinks, and each year it is slightly different.

HornyHornersPinger · 31/08/2025 18:33

Tomorrow... 😫 Can already feel the depression coming.

You've got another 3 weeks before depression sets in !

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 31/08/2025 18:46

Who & when decided that man-made calendar months decided the seasons?

Whoever & whenever, they're wrong.

Confusedmermaid1 · 31/08/2025 18:51

Yes I believe autumn starts tomorrow but DH insists on 22nd Sept
Either way my pumpkins will be coming out tomorrow 😂 before anyone starts about ‘tat’, MIL made them for us a few years ago, she loves to craft things
The leaves are all falling here already and there’s a thunder storm raging, definitely feels autumnal and I love it!

frozendaisy · 31/08/2025 18:52

For me yes meteorological seasons here, 1st September is Autumn.

But honestly don’t care, equinox is fine if you prefer that. It’s measured both ways scientifically.

PurpleChrayn · 31/08/2025 18:52

Tomorrow.

AutumnOffGrid · 31/08/2025 18:53

22nd

It’s still really warm. I’ll get my winter gear out on the 22nd.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 31/08/2025 18:54

@oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends unfortunately though astrologically months exist at precise intervals nature doesn't play ball seasons vary in length depending on distance from equator. The far north of Scotland is beyond the wheat line meaning the period from when soil is warm enough for wheat to germinate to when it is harvested is too short for wheat hence growing oats or barley which needs less time. Most of UK is beyond grape line as season not long enough for grapes to ripen . . Some places winter is from October first snow to April with last falling snow spring and autumn are brief with a short summer. Other places further south summers stretches from May to October with winter being 6-8 weeks with spring in February. If your SAD is weather dependent it will start with cooling weather if it is about daylight then yes it will be dates on the calendar dependant

Starbri8 · 31/08/2025 18:57

I was taught that autumn starts on the 1st of August ….that was many years ago though 🤔

onwardandupwards · 31/08/2025 18:57

Once the first mammoth spider crosses into my house is when I consider autumn is here, the first one was found yesterday so not too sure on that theory 🤔 😅
