Could he sell?

We live in a flat that is attached to a family run business, a business that has been in the same family for generations, is named after the family etc.

2 weeks ago the letting agents invited us to sign for another 12 months fixed term which we did. Yesterday my downstairs neighbour told me she has been given 2 months notice to leave, and when she asked the landlord why he said because he wants her flat back.
She has taken this to mean that he is selling the whole lot, but I think surely if that's the case they wouldn't have just signed with us for another 12 months. Does anyone know if there's a loophole where he could still sell?

Is there a get out clause? Often there’s one at six months. But no he can’t remove you from a fixed term tenancy unless breach of contract (not paying rent etc). After the fixed term of the tenancy he can give notice, or give you notice he will not be renewing.

It could be that the landlord wants to use the neighbour's flat to house a relative.

Years ago my brother and his then partner were given notice to leave their flat because their landlady's son was separating from his wife so she wanted to help him out by giving him somewhere to live.

Wanting to sell isn't the only reason a landlord will want their property back.
