I'm in the mood to make porridge this week. How do you make yours?
I usually just buy the quaker oats pots. However, I expect like many things, it's better homemade.

I do 1:4 ratio of oats to milk (jumbo oats and oat milk personally!). Then low and slow on the hob, stirring frequently. And as far as I'm concerned, golden syrup cannot be beaten as a topping, although banana and Nutella comes a close second!!

JulietSierra · 30/08/2025 20:12

Love porridge made with oat milk and I top mine with pecans, maple syrup, a dusting of cinnamon and some sultanas 😋

ILoveWhales · 30/08/2025 20:13

If you like sugar sprinkle brown across the top ...turns it into creme brulee style glaze

Oats, milk, sultanas, and cinnamon cooked in the slow cooker over night. Perfect porridge every morning 😋

ResultsMayVary · 30/08/2025 20:14

I love apple or banana and some cinnamon sugar

Nevermine · 30/08/2025 20:15

Toast the oats first. Cook with water only and add milk later

Oftenaddled · 30/08/2025 20:16

I wouldn't bother with the oat pots. They are not worth the price.

I usually microwave mine, so it's no bother. Roughly the same volume of oats and water, and about half as much milk as water. Large deep bowl. Stop after 2 minutes, then three minutes, to stir, maybe up to four minutes in all. Top with seeds, sometimes brown sugar or jam too, and a little moat of cold milk 😋

Vegalyra · 30/08/2025 20:18

For a quick breakfast I put 50g of oats and milk (usually oat milk) in the microwave for 2 minutes. Then stir in some peanut butter. For toppings I use flaxseeds, chia seeds and sometimes honey. Quick and filling.

AthenaWhite · 30/08/2025 20:19

Jumbo oats and cooked low and slow with water and a pinch of salt. I have mine with banana, blueberries and a big dollop of Greek yoghurt,

DistractMe · 30/08/2025 20:19

We make porridge the slow way using pinhead oatmeal. Ratio 4:1 water to oats and simmer for about 20 minutes. It's much creamier than when made with rolled oats.

DH eats his neat 😮I usually add a chopped banana, some cranberries and a few pumpkin seeds

dudsville · 30/08/2025 20:19

I always do loads of cinnamon and raisins, a handful of frozen berries, a scoop of ground mixed nuts with 1 to 2 oats to unsweetened soy milk. It comes out blue and delicious!

jettisoned · 30/08/2025 20:20

Can't beat butter and sugar. I microwave mine - 1/2 cup of oats and 1 cup milk. Heat for 4 mins, add butter sugar and some cold milk.

persisted · 30/08/2025 20:23

I do a 1:2 ratio, 1/2 cup oats to one cup milk.
Microwave or if time slow on the hob, I prefer it that way.

Sweet toppings for me - golden syrup, jam, some cooked apple and a bit of nut butter, a few chopped nuts. Stewed rhubarb. A spoon of cocoa in the milk before cooking for chocolate porridge, a spoon of instant coffee as well for mocha. Bit of cinnamon and/ or ginger in there.

Tomorrows pre run porridge will feature nectarine and peanut butter

One cup of oats, two of (dairy, whole) milk. Handful of raisins if you like them. Medium heat, stir so it doesn’t stick.
We add more cold milk in the bowl, plus honey/jam.

In weather when the kitchen is chilly overnight, I soak the oats in the saucepan overnight on top of the hob, then flick the gas on under it while the kettle boils, turn it back off when the tea’s made and let it sit. It’s perfect by the time we’re dressed. Zero effort school breakfast.

bumblebramble · 30/08/2025 20:26

Third of a cup of oats, to a cup of milk. I sometimes add dried fruit or frozen fruit, and microwave at 600w for 3 minutes and stir. Then I microwave for another 1-2 minutes (2 if using frozen berries because they add moisture). Chop a banana while it’s cooling and add another splash of milk. Lovely.

Sometimes I add a spoonful of ground almond, or coconut for something different. Or I might put in some milled chia and milled wheat germ for extra fibre, and a handful of walnuts crushed on top for a bit of crunch.

Unicornskies · 30/08/2025 20:30

Toast the oats in the pan with a spoonful of butter first before adding the milk.

Cinnamon, honey, smooth peanut butter are the best toppings but recently I've also started adding ginger (powdered) to it - so nice and warming. Also trying to up my protein lately so adding some Greek yoghurt makes it so tasty and creamy.

Mauro711 · 30/08/2025 20:30

I make mine with a grated apple in the porridge and then sugar and cinnamon on top. Sometimes flaked almonds too.

Icecreamhelps · 30/08/2025 20:32

1 cup of oats 2 milk, serves two people. Heat in a pan on a medium heat stirring continuously until it boils and thickens. My favourite topping is brown sugar, cinnamon and grated apple. My dad used to make his with water and salt.

saraclara · 30/08/2025 20:32

I chop up a piece of crystallised stem ginger and add it for the last minute of cooking (or to Moma instant oats sachets when I add the boiling water)

TomatoSandwiches · 30/08/2025 20:34

I love mine topped with brown sugar and a bit of evaporated milk, toasted nuts 😋

BCBird · 30/08/2025 20:37

It is lovely if u mash a ripe banana into the mixture whilst cooking. I used to put a healthy dollop of crunch peanut butter in it too. I have now switched to.peanut butter powder as it has the taste but not the calories.

Hatty65 · 30/08/2025 20:46

These all sound lovely, but my Scottish MIL would faint at the idea of adding anything other than salt to your porridge. She was horrified when I put sugar and milk on mine in front of her.

She does make excellent porridge, though.

Pebbles16 · 30/08/2025 20:59

Gah to all you sweet porridge people. What has happened to the world? Although admittedly on a treat day, there might be a smidge of golden syrup/honey - whatever might be lurking in the cupboards.
Was never a fan of sweet porridge and fail to be convinced (i was once served some instant oats concoction with apple and cinnamon by a lovely lady who was convinced I would find it "very authentic" because it was from Quaker. I nearly gagged).
I've even been in hotels in Scotland where they absolutely fail to understand "proper" porridge.
I use pinhead oats (1 part) plus water (2 parts) and a good pinch of salt. Takes 15 minutes. You can soak the oats for a bit beforehand and make it shorter. Or make a batch and then heat it up in a few minutes for the following days.
Yes, I do have a spurtle.
No, I am not Scottish.

Oats, milk, sultanas, and cinnamon cooked in the slow cooker over night. Perfect porridge every morning 😋

See I tried this and it fully burned onto the sides of the slow cooker even though it was just on the normal low setting - never dared try it again that way!

LighthouseTeaCup · 30/08/2025 21:10

1 porridge oats: 2 milk. Cook on the hob. Grate in an apple. Serve with brown sugar on top
