I'm in the mood to make porridge this week. How do you make yours?
I usually just buy the quaker oats pots. However, I expect like many things, it's better homemade.

These all sound lovely, but my Scottish MIL would faint at the idea of adding anything other than salt to your porridge. She was horrified when I put sugar and milk on mine in front of her.

She does make excellent porridge, though.

My dad's the same.

Wish I knew how McDonalds makes theirs. It’s absolutely spot on.

SabbatWheel · 30/08/2025 21:27

The Scots way - 3/4 mug of Scots Porage Oats, 1 cup of water, 1/2tsp salt all in a jug.

Heat on high in the microwave for a minute, stir, keep microwaving until they are the consistency you like. For me it’s only about 30s.

A layer of sugar on top with some whole milk too. Gorgeous, quick and filling.

Cold overnight oats, so delish! 1/2 cup oats, 1 cup milk. Spoon of cacao and cinnamon. In the morning put banana and berries on top. Sooo good

jamnpancakes · 30/08/2025 21:48

With salt!

Lemonbaytree · 30/08/2025 21:51

In the Instant Pot with ether steel cut oats or jumbo oats. It's so creamy!

Peanut butter and homemade jam
Peanut butter and yoghurt or banana

Brown sugar and cinnamon

Scentedjasmin · 30/08/2025 21:52

Raisins, grated apple and cinnamon with maple syrup on top!

My family’s favourite is oats, milk, sultanas, pinch of cinammon and grated apple cooked low and slow. Yum!

Ha! Just noticed the post above!

TomatoSandwiches · 30/08/2025 21:57

Never had it with salt, how much would you put in a serving for 1?

DameSylvieKrin · 30/08/2025 21:57

Baked, with blueberries

limetrees32 · 30/08/2025 21:58

Oats + water , cook.
Add salt and almond milk

stample · 30/08/2025 21:59

Make my porridge half and half with milk and water.
my topping are normally…
nutella and raspberries
blueberries and honey
sprinkle of sugar
cinnamon
Cherries and dark choc chips (or a melted square of dark choc)
ive also added protein powders to them for flavours

WonderingWanda · 30/08/2025 21:59

If you want an unhealthy option, make them with milkmaid then add cream and maple syrup.

CanOfMangoTango · 30/08/2025 22:03

Mmmm porridge.

I make it every day, Scottish oats, semi skimmed milk, cooked on the hob.

Always stir peanut butter into it, usually have banana or some other fruit as well.

I used to use non dairy milk but I've gone to organic milk now to avoid UPFs

CharlotteStreetW1 · 30/08/2025 22:05

1 part porridge
1 part milk
1 part water
Cook in microwave (I know! The horror!)

My topping of choice is soft dark brown sugar.

Ilovemyshed · 30/08/2025 22:07

Really good quality oats, full fat milk and cook slowly, stirring all the time. Finish with a whole tin of condensed milk poured over the top 🤣

jumpingjaque · 30/08/2025 22:08

Surely the OP is asking for a recipe? Measures, times? Have yet to see one. Posted to follow for an actual recipe.

StressedEric · 30/08/2025 22:16

1 cup water or milk to 1 cup porridge oats

microwave for 2 mins on 900w, then 30 second bursts to get to my preferred consistency

toppings :

Easter - mini eggs !
Christmas - apple and cinnamon . My son puts his advent chocolate in Aldi
everyday - salt and brown sugar
weekends - fruit & Nutella - usually raspberries and blueberries
snacks -,snickers porridge - crunchy peanut butter and Nutella

RedwallMattimeo · 30/08/2025 22:53

Make porridge using the usual ratio of oats & milk on the hob.
When ready, sprinkle on chia, flax & linseed. Then natural yogurt. Then half a banana. Then a handful of berries. Then drizzle some honey. Perfection!
DD has hers with yogurt, peanut butter & half a banana.
There are issues if the bananas are smaller than usual as the dilemma if you’re the first person to make breakfast is whether you just have half of it or take a bigger proportion

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/08/2025 23:03

I’m a lazy cow and use the sachets in the microwave, with almond milk. Squirty peanut butter or Biscoff, chopped apple (might grate this now I have read pp do that) and raisins. I’m still on Greek yoghurt/granola/apple/honey for now though.

Tisfortired · 30/08/2025 23:13

God I love porridge. My favourite way is on the hob, 50g jumbo oats and 300ml of gold top milk. Cooked low and slow until it’s thick and creamy. Every so often if we have them spare I’ll stew some apples with cinnamon and stir that through, with an extra sprinkle of cinnamon and brown sugar on top.

However most mornings it’s half water half semi skimmed, with a quick drizzle of honey and whatever fruit we have in chucked on top.

FloridaCat · 30/08/2025 23:20

I prefer my porridge made with water and a pinch of salt. I like to add Greek yoghurt and banana or a dollop of jam

Eta: @StressedEric mini eggs! Amazing idea!

coxesorangepippin · 31/08/2025 03:05

Quick oats

Full fat milk

Ten mins on lowish heat, but has to bubble

Remove from heat

Bowl

Top with brown sugar, splash of milk

We like Buddy Oliver’s Chocolatey Porridge. It’s in his cook book but it might be on BBC Good Food. He’s Jamie Oliver’s son and DD has his cook book.
