I'm in the mood to make porridge this week. How do you make yours?
I usually just buy the quaker oats pots. However, I expect like many things, it's better homemade.

We keep a jar with homemade cinnamon sugar in it. We also have made some pumpkin spice sugar, which is all the spices for pumpkin spice mixed with brown sugar. It is so nice.

I microwave mine as well, and guesstimate the quantities. I put oats in bulk, add milk and put in for two minutes. If dry, i’ll throw in a splurge of milk. If too wet, I’ll stir in some more milk.

Toppings I have include chopped up apples, peach, or (defrosted) frozen blueberries

Surely the OP is asking for a recipe? Measures, times? Have yet to see one. Posted to follow for an actual recipe.

Basic porridge recipe:
1 cup of milk
3/4 cup of oats
pinch of salt

cook on the hob and stir or microwave but take it out every minute to stir and make sure it doesn’t boil over.

top with any of the delicious toppings mentioned on here.

If you want an unhealthy option, make them with milkmaid then add cream and maple syrup.

I love the versatility of porridge.

my unhealthy version is double cream and a shot of whisky. Thank you Scottish farmer grandparents ❤️😂

Rolled oats.of some quantity. I just pour into the pot.
Cover with boiling water. Leave in the pot.
Drink coffee in bed.
Pour in milk to cover by a fair bit. Put in a small low flame and get dressed while it cooks.
Serve with what ever is kicking about. Lately peanut butter, but golden syrup is good. Or rasins, apple is good too. I've been know to add grated carrot and make it a carrot cake flavoured one but we are early risers in winter so I can't be bothers

We make porridge the slow way using pinhead oatmeal. Ratio 4:1 water to oats and simmer for about 20 minutes. It's much creamier than when made with rolled oats.

DH eats his neat 😮I usually add a chopped banana, some cranberries and a few pumpkin seeds

I do this too and make extra for the next couple of days. Usually eat with yoghurt nuts and frozen berries. I soak the oatmeal overnight to make it a bit quicker.

I find normal porridge oats cook just as quickly as the micro pots and use them if I’ve run out of steel cut oats.

NetZeroZealot · 31/08/2025 07:24

I cup jumbo oats
1 cup milk
1 cup water
1 spoonful chia seeds.

Soak for half an hour before cooking.

Top with berries (frozen blueberries are good) or banana.
Add a teaspoonful of mixed seeds.

Eat.

NetZeroZealot · 31/08/2025 07:25

My recipe makes 2 servings

MonsteraAddict · 31/08/2025 08:14

I'm so pleased I asked the question. So many great options to try. I'm popping to the shops today to get ingredients. I think I'll start with oats milk, seeds, banana and a small sprinkle of brown sugar.

For one helping, half a cup of oats (bog standard supermarket) to a cup of milk in a pan. Bring to boil, simmer a few minutes, done. Add whatever you like.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 31/08/2025 09:52

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but… When people say “a cup” do they mean as in the American measurement, or as in a mug? If it’s a mug, what type of mug - DP uses massive Cath Kidston ones which must be about a half pint when full of tea.,

Nannyfannybanny · 31/08/2025 10:03

Blimey full fat milk plus condensed,! I make mine with water, dash of milk, any fruit toppings, I love overnight oats in a jar
The cupful could be any old size depending on amount required, doesn't need to be an exact science..my slow cooker has a huge terracotta pot,it would take forever to clean it. I've stayed in Glasgow and Edinburgh several times, asked where was the porridge was told Scots folk don't stay in the hotels and the English don't like porridge!

It doesn’t matter as long as you use the same cup to measure the liquid and the oats. I use a 100 mL measuring cup for me and a 60 mL one for the children if making a single portion in the microwave.

Cecilly · 31/08/2025 10:36

I like my porridge with a spoonful of honey and tahini. Tastes nice 😊

Thank you! I wasn’t sure if people meant cups as in drinking cups, or actual measures. I’m so lazy using sachets and need to up my game.

twilightcafe · 31/08/2025 12:23

I'm old school.

Oats, milk (cow or oat), pinch of salt & cinnamon and a sprinkle of demerara sugar on top.

NapoleonsToe · 31/08/2025 12:31

Low and slow on the hob, water, pinch of salt, bit of milk near the end. The oats need regular stirring to make them creamy and the temperature needs to be just right, so definitely no microwave.

Walnut, banana and maple syrup or chopped almonds and raspberries/apricots.

This recipe for toasted oats. It takes longer but it's delicious. Perfect for a weekend breakfast.

Editing to say I also love regular porridge made with half milk, half water and topped with a sprinkle of brown sugar and cinnamon.

Genius, this is the cold cure of my dreams.
There’ll be a miserable morning in January when this will be just the ticket.
