How many times could you wear the same dress or top before it smelled?

I genuinely can’t wear a dress or top twice in summer no matter how much deodorant I put on. I don’t have terribly BO but anything that touches my armpits all day doesn’t smell fresh.

I have to put a tight top underneath the dress to keep it fresh but that often spoils the look if the dress is at all low cut or has short arms or is tight. Even in winter I do this to wear the dress more than a couple of times.

I’m always frustrated there aren’t more tops for sale cut so that they can be used like this without showing - but maybe there aren’t such tops because others do not have to wear them. Do you?

I don’t sweat it’s actually a bit of an issue as I get so hot, I also have dry ear wax. It’s not a medical condition but a genetic variation. It’s easy to look up and quite an oddity. I am half East Asian and it’s a common genetic variant among East Asians as is not being able to process Alcohol well, which I also have, the phenomena of Asian Blush. So I can wear clothes until they are actually dirty because I have dropped something on them.

To add though my Mother was white my Dads genetics were very dominant in looks as well.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 30/08/2025 09:37

Once.

TeenLifeMum · 30/08/2025 09:36

Huh? Why? I don’t generally sweat - I did on holiday at 43 degrees but below 30 degrees I only sweat if I’m exercising. Walking around I just don’t. Washing clothes for the sake of it is so bad for the environment.

I offset my daily washing by not travelling to countries with 43° heat for a holiday. You don’t have the moral high ground here.

This is a useful tip! Most of my work dresses are dry clean only which is why I try and find good under tops because I want a good week of wear before paying for dry cleaning.

Edited

I certainly wouldn’t be wearing the same outfit for a week at a time! It would be two days maximum for me, but generally I wash tops after every wear.

TheregoesSummer · 30/08/2025 09:40

If I was working I would only wear a top once and then wash it. If I am just around the house and clean then I could wear a top twice.

CeciliaDuckiePond · 30/08/2025 09:40

Depends on weather and how active I've been, all that kind of thing. Probably twice on average. I have a 'lucky top' I wore for 4 days for a series of job interviews where there wasn't time to wash it and it really started to pong but the interviews were over Teams and I did them at home, so it didn't really matter, and I didn't get the bloody job in the end, so it's no longer my lucky top 😂

Because I went on one holiday in Europe 😂 I do love mumsnet for entertainment.

TheregoesSummer · 30/08/2025 09:41

I think it’s daft to buy dry clean only dresses and then wear a top underneath. It must be uncomfortable for a start. Wear washable dresses or a top and a skirt!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/08/2025 09:41

I’d never wear a top that was next to my underarms twice. Knitwear yes.

If you didn't sweat, you'd have serious issues. You probably mean you don't sweat from your forehead. Your underarms will be moist amd sweaty but you've just got used to that smell on you now.

I don’t care where you holiday, not don’t pretend you are morally superior.

DiscoBob · 30/08/2025 10:25

By the end of one day my pits smell a bit, so less than once?!

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 30/08/2025 10:34

Once. Anything else is grim. People always think they don’t smell but they really do.

MummaMummaMumma · 30/08/2025 10:36

I wonder how many women who feel not showering.daily and wearing dirty clothes is acceptable also find themselves in the large group of women who find men reluctant to go down on them. They don't realise that their lack of hygiene really is smelly everywhere

😂it’s bizzare, and probably quite telling, that that is where your mind went 😂

That’s interesting.

My clothes, and ds’ clothes smell of things like cooking, and the places we’ve been, or the perfume of someone who hugged us.
Dh and Dd’s clothes smell of body odour. Dd is a teen and is managing about half a day at the moment before it is noticeable. I’d see if ds is wearing a dirty t shirt because it would be rumpled or stained, but my nose wouldn’t register anything.

I thought maybe I was just a bit nose blind to my own odours, and maybe to ds as well for some reason. But now you mention it we both have that dry, crumbly type of ear wax and my mother doesn’t particularly sweat or smell either. No East Asian heritage though.

Natsku · 30/08/2025 11:00

I would suggest getting dresses that aren't dry clean only!

I mostly wear cotton t-shirts that aren't too tight. The ones I wear for work I wear 2 or 3 days in a row. Outside of work I usually change my t-shirt every day in summer because they do get more sweaty then but in winter I'll wear for a couple of a days before changing.

whatasillygoose · 30/08/2025 11:13

Usually once but if I haven’t had something on for much time then maybe twice. I don’t have anything that needs dry cleaning though apart from maybe one coat.

NapoleonsToe · 30/08/2025 11:16

Ihavetoask · 30/08/2025 08:16

Nobody should be wearing these things more than once.

Why?

I could wear a top for a week and it still wouldn't smell. I don't, but if I did, what would happen?

WhereAreWeNow · 30/08/2025 11:20

I wash tops every time. Some loose blouses I might wear twice. Dresses which are cut loose around the arms I'll wear a few times. It depends on what I've been doing and how hot it is. If I'm just going to the air conditioned office I can definitely stretch it out for a few wears. If I was rushing round outside on a hot day I'd wash after one wear.

Youcunnyfunt · 30/08/2025 11:20

2 or 3 times, however, my job is sedentary and I change into exercise gear after work, so I’m not in the clothes for the entire day. I think that makes a big difference! So it’s not really reducing my washing load, because I only wear the sports gear once. Also, I do find synthetic clothes need washing after 1 day. So it depends on the fabric.

WhereAreWeNow · 30/08/2025 11:21

In the winter I always wear uniqlo heatech tops under everything so wash dresses and jumpers less. I'm generally freezing cold and not a very sweaty person.

TheGetAlongGang · 30/08/2025 11:23

Once but only because I sweat heavily

When I'm putting a wash on,I can smell bo and it's always my clothes that whiff

Dp wears his stuff for a few days as he doesn't seem to smell at all (even the same tee that he's worn for a week)

I’m not saying I’m morally superior, I’m genuinely shocked by the amount of water people must be using washing things for the sake of it.

I wear antiperspirant through habit but and don’t get damp at all. I did a little when I was 2 stone heavier but can you not comprehend that some people just aren’t sweaty?

anyway, generally I’d wear a top twice before washing unless I got something on it (usually muddy dog paws) and jeans I’d wear up to 4 times. Underwear is a one wear thing for me.
