How many times could you wear the same dress or top before it smelled?

I genuinely can’t wear a dress or top twice in summer no matter how much deodorant I put on. I don’t have terribly BO but anything that touches my armpits all day doesn’t smell fresh.

I have to put a tight top underneath the dress to keep it fresh but that often spoils the look if the dress is at all low cut or has short arms or is tight. Even in winter I do this to wear the dress more than a couple of times.

I’m always frustrated there aren’t more tops for sale cut so that they can be used like this without showing - but maybe there aren’t such tops because others do not have to wear them. Do you?

Only once for a top or dress, I can wear trousers a couple of times though.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 30/08/2025 09:01

Totally depends on what it's made of. Merino wool t-shirts I can wear for 4 to 5 days (or until I drop something down them) before they smell at all. They are also easy to hand wash and dry overnight so perfect for travelling.

OhMyGiddyAunt · 30/08/2025 09:04

Usually only once but if it's not a close fitting top, it hasn't been hot and I've not been very active then sometimes I'll wear a second time.

Second wears though tend to not be for work or going out, just for being at home as I'm conscious that you can get nose blind and would be worried about smelling.

It isn't perfectly clean if you've been in it all day. I smell what happens every day - the person stinks.

A matter of opinion. I have a colleague who thinks that clothes only smell “clean” if they been through fabric conditioner. That’s not a clean smell, that’s a chemical smell.

Hygbridghhh · 30/08/2025 09:08

I used to be able to do it for up to 3 days. It wouldn't smell. But recently I smell in half a day. Anyone else had this, did you figure out the cause?

RaininSummer · 30/08/2025 09:10

Once for the office and then once at home normally as not perfectly fresh second wear. I can't justify washing things that often.

If people smell of "damp mildew" then the issue is more likely that the item has been washed but then put out to dry on an airer with too many other items/in a cold room etc and so taken too long to dry. That's a very different smell from someone rewearing yesterday's T-shirt that they ran 2 miles to the bus stop in. I
agree that nose blindness is a thing though - it just doesn't mean that everyone needs to wash every item after every wear.

Absolutely, damp mildew is from drying too slowly, sweat smells are completely different.

Agreed. It’s definitely stale sweat I smell on my morning commute into work 🤢

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 30/08/2025 09:13

A week! I would be twice maximum, normally once.

mindutopia · 30/08/2025 09:13

Several days, unless I’m doing something intentionally sweaty. I don’t wear layers though (no wonder you’re sweating). And this will freak the clean brigade out, but I don’t shower every day, only if I’ve actually left the house or done something dirty. And I don’t put deodorant on daily either., maybe 3 times a week after a shower. I think sometimes we mess our bodies up by washing and putting all sorts of stuff on them so that we lose that natural equilibrium.

Seeline · 30/08/2025 09:13

Wear an antiperspirant, rather than a deodorant.

Easily get 2-3 wears out of most things if it's just been normal wear. Obviously gym stuff needs washing every time, or if you've worn it whilst frying onions etc. I normally have to wash stuff because I've dropped my dinner down it, rather than it smelling!

I've not counted, but I often wear something and return it to the wardrobe to be worn again. Everything gets washed at 30 degrees eventually. Pants I wear once but everything else has to pass the sniff test

deblcouen · 30/08/2025 09:18

HostaCentral · 30/08/2025 08:46

In the Summer tops once, but dresses two or three wears. In Winter longer. Clothes are always hung and aired on the chairdrobe. I only wear natural fibres. They get a sniff test every morning! Mostly they just smell of deodorant and perfume.

Edited

Stale perfume is more offensive than BO imo. Worse if you wear the item again and end up with layers of the stuff. Yuk.

No the smell of BO smells mildewy to me. It's the damp underarms mixing with the bacteria. Listen if you want to wear your tops for days at a time, do it. Lots of people do.

WorriedRelative · 30/08/2025 09:23

I change when I get home so I don't get cooking smells on my good clothes or spill my dinner down them, or add excess wear. Work clothes then don't need to be cleaned as frequently and last longer.

See the fact that this person believes they don't smell like the man in the other thread who does shower every day is mind boggling to me. With all the love in the world, you must reek.

SomeOfTheTrouble · 30/08/2025 08:50

The problem is, travelling on trains regularly has made me realise that some people must think that they smell perfectly fresh, when they absolutely don’t. Even on the morning commute into work a lot of people smell of stale sweat, so they must think they’ve put on clean clothes.

This.

Once for anything that's an inner layer. A dress maybe twice, but it depends on the fabric and on what I've been doing during the day.

Gettingbysomehow · 30/08/2025 09:27

I barely sweat post menopause so I can wear things for a week in winter if I want to, I don't tend to do that though and shower a lot because I work in the NHS.
In summer if its hot I change my clothes everyday whether I need to or not.
Also weight has a lot to do with it. When I was fat I sweated more, now Im thin I feel the cold a lot more and don't sweat.

JLou08 · 30/08/2025 09:30

I'd only wear a top or dress one day before putting in the wash.

Flomingho · 30/08/2025 09:31

I wash a tshirt or top after it has been worn once. May get a couple of wears if it is a shirt or sweatshirt worn over the top though. I tend to sweat easily though so would worry about smelling of BO.

Gettingbysomehow · 30/08/2025 09:31

I know if something smells or not. I have a very sharp nose. If you wear an under layer under a jumper it doesn't need washing so much.

Ihavetoask · 30/08/2025 09:33

I wonder how many women who feel not showering.daily and wearing dirty clothes is acceptable also find themselves in the large group of women who find men reluctant to go down on them. They don't realise that their lack of hygiene really is smelly everywhere

Poodlelove · 30/08/2025 09:35

Tops , jumpers and shirts once , even in winter .
Trousers / skirts 2 days.

TeenLifeMum · 30/08/2025 09:36

Ihavetoask · 30/08/2025 08:16

Nobody should be wearing these things more than once.

Huh? Why? I don’t generally sweat - I did on holiday at 43 degrees but below 30 degrees I only sweat if I’m exercising. Walking around I just don’t. Washing clothes for the sake of it is so bad for the environment.
