When is “after midnight on August 27th”?

Dang … Have just ordered something in the certainty that I still had time before the supplier’s annual holiday started after midnight tonight.

Their emailed acknowledgement suggests they’re already downing G&Ts on a plane somewhere and I won’t get my delivery for another couple of weeks.

Am I stupidly wrong?

After midnight on 27th is actually the 28th surely?

saveforthat · 27/08/2025 12:09

Also depends if they are in the same time zone as you.

RisingSunn · 27/08/2025 12:09

It’s the first hour of the 28th August.

midnight is 00:00 not 24:00
so the day runs from: midnight 00:00 through until 23:59:59

which means that technically the midnight belonging to a specific day or date is the start of the day - so they went for 00:00 this morning - you were hoping for tonight...

so they are technically right - but it is bad communication!

After Midnight on the 27th was last night. 00.00 is the start of the new day.

As someone who is of the age that lined up for the last few Harry Potter books when they launched at midnight, I’d say it was last night. If a book was launching at midnight on a particular day, I arrived at the shop at 11:45 of the day before.

I would take midnight of the day to be thr very start of that day so first thing 27th August.

<Weeps>

Ok - you’ve convinced me I’m not getting a delivery this week!

Well, those of you advocating for ‘the end of the 26th’ as the cut off point were wrong! 😂

I went away for a couple of days and, opening my door on my return, saw a note from Royal Mail saying they’d left me a parcel. Carefully hidden behind the bins.

I’m unreasonably delighted. Though if it had been books they’d have been mulch by now. Bottles, fortunately!
