So it's just you, no kids, pets, partner. You're 35 and healthy no allergies. You have to devise a way of having the lowest budget possible to feed yourself.

Really interesting as I have been thinking about this a lot. We is this hypothetical person located? Major city? On the outskirts? I am thinking a lot of lentels & beans. Maybe we have access to a fresh water stream or not? Obviously bulk cooking is the only way. Pulses...vegs that sustain a couple days. No meats really, maybe a special chicken evening meal. Very interesting and politically very relevant as well.

I think it's urban but they might have a garden. Maybe not and they can use their local knowledge, do they go and have dhal at gurdwaras?

Maybe see if we can set a food budget of £5pw, they have oil, seasonings and cook/dinnerware.

Who has oil, seasonings and cook/dinnerware. Interesting concept.

Olio / too good to go.

So it's just you, no kids, pets, partner.
Team up with others so you can share costs (travel, cooking-fuel, etc)

Ah, a commune! I suppose that works better. If you each have £5 that's enough for dried beans, lentils and vegetables.

Or, work it backwards and work out a basic menu and see what it costs for one person.

Porridge 80p? made with water
Lunch and dinner is a vast pot of dried beans/lentils and vegetables.

Lentils in tesco I think is £2 for 2kg.

Lidl wonky veg box (possibly mythical, I've never seen one) is £1.50, enough for one person for the week.

I think that's £4.30 and you would stay alive. And be very miserable 😂

What are the rules of the game? Are we post-apocalypse, so everyone is up the creek. Or are most other people OK(ish), it's just the Young Adult that has the problem.

madaboutpurple · 23/09/2025 10:56

You could get recipes from how to feed your family on £20 a week.

madaboutpurple · 23/09/2025 10:59

You could buy only things that are in the reduction section eg Asda's yellow sticker sections.

Kingsleysmum123 · 23/09/2025 17:13

ah I'm already miserable with this current government at the moment & with everything going on sometimes I do think about it. Obviously, the kids are really the only good reason. But sometimes I do wonder.....

Yes curious. Is this us or them?

Geneticsbunny · 23/09/2025 17:46

Bin diving? Is that still a thing? You used to be able to get really good edible food from the supermarket bins.

Oh, interesting! I think it's not an apocalypse (for now) only our game piece has the problem.

It's just you/her, no dependents.

Or go to an outdoor market as they're packing up and see what produce you can blag.

Me too, I'm brassic and amuse myself by pretending there's a war on and chuntering about digging for victory.

I'm up for bin diving and liberating toilet roll. There's also scrumping.

Oh, good. She has a name/descriptor: Our Game Piece (OGP).

Why does OGP only have £5/pw. Why can't she earn her way out of trouble. In fact 'earn' could be a very flexible term - she could become a professional beggar; a companion in exchange for board and lodging; or she could be the dependent (a kept woman).

Where does she live? How does she have the money for rent but not food. Maybe she's on the streets with no fixed abode and that's why she can't get a job.

Dogaredabomb · 24/09/2025 10:53

OGP doesn't necessarily only have £5pw, we're deciding how little to give her sothat she can stay alive, we could reduce it.

I don't know why she doesn't have housing costs. She is free to scam (ie begging, kept woman, trading) but not have a normal job.

I can't decide where she lives, I thought about putting her on an island and she has to fish and eat coconuts. We can do that afterwards. We can even get her from her urban environment to an island.

Suggestion: she can get food by legitimate means (yellow stickers, etc), anti-social means (shoplifting, scrumping, etc) or CF means (over-reliance on the goodwill of others: gurdwara, begging, etc).
Every A/S or CF food-gain gets her penalty points (maybe a sliding scale), and after enough pp she gets deported to the island.

Dogaredabomb · 24/09/2025 13:39

I LOVE THAT

For her first move she's going to the hospital to steal a white coat. This white coat can be used for many purposes.

She can steal valium to sell or pretend to be a lollipop lady at Christmas and get presents. Also a hospital doctors ID would be handy, for the canteen and drugs. And a stethoscope as a prop.

She can also go to restaurants and pretend to be a food inspector from the council.
