There’s a giant spider above my bed
DH is asleep in DC room
i can’t burn the house down as DC and DCat are home
spider too far away to squish (shudder) or catch (double shudder)
I could sleep on the sofa but I keep thinking of coming back into the room tomorrow and not being able to see it because it’s hiding, waiting to attack

(yes I know it’s smaller than I am and more scared blah blah but I really am terrified of them and am currently supervising out of range)

If the gangly ones look like Daddy Long Legs without legs then they're Cellar spiders.
So keep them as they eat the fat hairy bastard spiders & every other spider too.
DD1 lovable idiot didn't believe me about the Cellar spiders & killed Stephanie, Steve, Soren & Saiorse (my pet Cellar spiders)
Tonight DD1 had said "I wish I'd listened to you Mum" as we now have an influx of the other yucky horrid spiders!

Financial · 27/08/2025 04:19

People kill spiders now?
When did that become a thing?

How's it going op? I've just had an unpleasant experience, which is why I'm awake. A massive house spider just ran over dh in bed, waking him up, onto me, so I stood up quickly and put the light on in time to see it fall off us/the bed and onto the floor. We managed to catch it and chuck it back out the window, but it's really unsettled me. I usually reassure myself they wouldn't want to go near us, but I guess they just get really bold/desperate at this time of year.

And yes. We let the spindly cellar spiders stay, but they're not doing their job this year. This is the third giant one in a week.

oh my god that’s horrendous!! Are you okay?!

it’s a big fat house spider. We also let the cellar spiders stay and thrive but they’re not doing their job either…

Honestly the cellar spiders need sacking if they can’t do their job properly! OP get dh to go through the wardrobe today and catch the offender!

Somethingsnapped · 27/08/2025 09:41

I am OK, thank you! It's silly really; I'm not usually too bad with spiders. I don't like the massive house spiders, but I deal with them myself (although wouldn't know what to do with one on the ceiling if I can't reach), but this really unnerved me. I was awake for a couple of hours, on edge. I ended up sending off for some cheap insect screens from amazon, to go over the window! As I can't bear to have the windows shut at night... I need fresh air. So I felt a bit better after I did that!

For future op, you could do the same, or use scent to deter them. Put citrus or peppermint essential oils around the windows. Mating season only lasts a few weeks.

I’ve allowed colonies of cellar spiders to thrive just to try to avoid this exact situation!
spider is hiding but in an area of wardrobe never used with its own door. So, I’ve decided to shut the door and not open it for about 25 years. Should be fine by then!!

Oh god, that really does sound horrendous 😭

thank you, I’ll try this. I know it sounds ridiculous but I wasn’t expecting them for another week or two!!! And we don’t normally get too many of them. I think our cellar spiders and cats take care of it normally. Ugh!! I hate spider season!

Capture a cellar spider and release it into your wardrobe, and let nature do its work!

God, even just reading this thread has given me the heebie jeebies!! 🕷 No advice OP, other than my sympathies 😭

DinoLil · 27/08/2025 11:59

Don't talk to me about spiders!

I also keep a cellar spider in each room and have all windows and doors closed until the end of September.

Those giant house spiders are not funny but, I went to fill up my dog's water bowl the other morning and, I swear to god, there was a monstrosity in the sink. It was brown and bigger than my hand! I've never, ever seen anything like it in 53yrs. It was absolutely massive, looked like it should have been in a zoo! According to my friend, it was a wolf spider. It was almost as big as a wolf! I've never heard of one but I daren't Google it because there will be pictures.

We don't usually get many either. I only rembember encountering one 'monster' last year during the season. But it's 4 so far just this season (in the last couple of weeks), 3 in either my bedroom or ensuite. I'm sure it's because it's these rooms where the big windows are wide open, as well as the smaller ones. Now it's cooled down, I'll only leave the little ones open, and put insect screens up. I've never considered this before, but having one run over us in the dark has properly given me the willies. It's like a joke really.. The one thing I have in my head that I can't stand the thought of, but think it's never really going to happen. I lived to tell the tale I guess, and the reality was, it tickled for a second and that was it! The after effects in my head were much worse!

If I am killed
for simply living,
let death be kinder
than man.

Please remember the spiders are just existing and capture and remove rather than killing them.
