Do onions make you tired?

Just had a salad.

Raw red onions or spring onions make me feel so sleepy!

Did it have lettuce in it? That is a known sleep aid.

Oh really? Yes I had some kind of mixed leaves.

Onions have made me tired before so maybe a double whammy with the lettuce! Might start having a salad before bed 😂

I used to come home from school and make a cheese and onion sandwich with raw onion then immediately feel like falling asleep. Didn't happen if I had anything else instead. I stopped eating raw onion ages ago, partly for that reason. Lettuce is supposed to make you sleepy but I haven't noticed that effect.

Just looked it up - it's the l-tryptophan in the raw onion - sleep-inducing but also antidepressant!

blackheartsgirl · 26/08/2025 14:25

No but they make fart loads and give me stomach ache.

never knew that lettuce leaves can make you sleepy!

I do like onion in a salad or in a sandwich but I may need to limit them at lunchtime!

I really hadn't noticed it with lettuce but I don't think I'd often eat lettuce without onions. If I were having a salad I would have onion in it so maybe that's why I haven't noticed.
