How do I furnish this cage?

My mother gave me this ornamental cage for my birthday. I have spent months trying to decide how to 'create' it. I do not want a plant!

What I'm after is a scene for the base. It could be a 'story', so curios that would link with each other, or a disparate collection to create a 'feel'.

The hanging boy at the top is a bit twee, and I don't necessarily need to continue with the twee tone, but he works, I think, in that he fills the upper part.

I love macabre, dark, ( see my doll's house).
The aim is to draw the eye and spark curiosity.

The cage opens at the front, but the floor also opens, so larger items can be put in, than would suggest from the front opening.

Please give me your unusual, dark, eerie suggestions.

It may take a while for the photos to appear due to review.

So many thanks.

Ooh I quite like the circus idea too!! Whatever you go for @Oneearringlost we need aaalll the pics and links and plans.

And at least one raven because everything is better with a raven!

Yes, well, I'll come back after Friday ( the Kensington miniature online fair starting on Friday), although I fear I may have to do a bit of tightening my belt if I find myself too seduced, by too much.

If anyone else has any other ideas/ inspiration/ sources, please, please contribute, not just for the cage but any dark/ disturbing creations in miniature.

Thank you, all of you.
I'll leave you with our 'Scooby Doo' secret door that DH made.
You have to pull on The Selected Poems of Elizabeth Barratt Browning, to open it ( middle L corner).

You might appreciate some of the bits on sale here, they have a marketplace event coming up on the 1st of September

Love the secret door, and hope your creative juices can conjure up something of the macabre for the cage. I agree with a pp who said you need something tall to fill the height of the cage

V jealous of the secret door. Want: anyhow, i came back to suggest maybe you could get several Elf on the Shelf’s and cage the little bastards. Have them all around the cage, hanging from the sides, etc.

Oh, my goodness, @Yesidoactually the Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death just gets better and better! This is just, well, everything I have always tried to create in my house...
I've got a hanging man in my doll's house! See picture, hopefully a slightly clearer one than before. How did I not know about this?
Thank you, everyone for your collective imagination and inspirations.

Have also got an excellent dressing up box, no grandchildren yet though...but we had very surreal evening meals when my, now adult children, were growing up, Miss Havisham, The Woman in Black, the first Mrs De Winter, Bram Stoker
