Hyped-up activities that are actually shite.

Loads of my friends do yoga. It's really relaxing, they say. It's really mindful, they say. It's a good workout without realising you're working out, they say. It's a really nice community of people, they say.

So on Saturday morning I tried it.

It was bloody awful. Everything about it was bloody terrible. It wasn't remotely relaxing or mindful. I wasn't a very good workout and the people were cult-loke lunatics.

And I've felt a bit lightheaded, dizzy, and just not quite myself ever since.

Tell me about activities that everyone seems to have a wide-on for, but which you hated.

Park run. I just can't get into it. I like running, but I can't get into the obsession surrounding PR.

Same. I don't get it.
I can absolutely see the social/community benefits, but it's just feels 'off' to me and I can't put a finger on why.

dayslikethese1 · 26/08/2025 08:14

I like most of the things listed, I must be very basic 😆

I'm so glad I am not the only one.
For me I hate the 'where will you be this Saturday' as opposed to 'will you be ding PR this weekend?' as though it's something obligatory and things that you may want to do with your partner/family have to 'fit in'.

For me, it’s the near constant talk about breathing . It’s actually really distracting and does the opposite to what I think it’s supposed to. Yes, breathing slowly can sortof help relax a tiny bit . It’s a filler sentence I think on repeat 😂 “learning to breath”, we’d all be in trouble by now if we didn’t have the hang of it .

Open mic nights are almost always grim.

😂 my son does these - thankfully in another city!

Alwayssnacking · 26/08/2025 08:22

Itstheshowgirl · 25/08/2025 20:24

Yes! They are so shite, there are some lovely people I work with but the ones organising the nights out, who see themselves as the Most Fun People Ever, and seem to think that we are all a bunch of teenagers who want to do nothing beyond getting pissed. I don’t drink so just avoid but then get nothing but shit for not going even though it has zero to do with work so I don’t see why I need to.

I will also agree with yoga, it’s boring.

Also agree with work nights out... I skip as many as possible.

Mindfulness. Went to a mindfulness course once as everyone raving about it. End of first session we all had to say what we thought was good about it. I literally said I thought it was a waste of time and that doing it made me so mad I wanted to punch someone. Shocked silence followed. I didn't go back.

Same. We had someone come into our work to impart the mindfulness bollocks, around 2010. The session finished off with an excruciating visit to the (public) car park below the office where we were instructed to 'walk like Samurai'. Slowly, with actions. I refused.

holidays....always ends up in arguements

Camping, particularly camping in England. Extra woe points for camping in England with a man who brings a guitar.

Christmas markets in the UK, and any Christmas event featuring hot chocolate or mulled wine.

Any party, holiday or spa day featuring a hot tub.

Any party that features sitting around a fire pit.

Crying with laughter at the man bringing a guitar 😆 yes very grim, 100 percent agree x

furrysocks · 26/08/2025 08:37

Sailing. Went once, got shouted at a lot. Screw that, I’m with Joey in Friends, I’ll just sit in the dock and drink beer

AutumnOffGrid · 26/08/2025 08:38

Hmmm, yoga can be amazing if you go to the right class and have a good teacher. Yoga in the UK is generally shite though.

Things that I think are overhyped;

Golf - it’s boring. It’s not a sport.
Pickleball
Walking, getting your steps in
Zumba
Mat Pilates
Aqua aerobics
Bootcamp
Going to nightclubs if you aren’t under 25

BogRollBOGOF · 26/08/2025 08:45

Team sports.
I suppose they're probably nice if you're good at them, rather than being the liability who can't control a ball/ projectile and cops the blame for the team losing.

Watching other people playing team sports (especially overpaid millionaires on TV) has always been mind-numbing to me.

I'll stick with my running/ yoga/ open water swimming where my ineptitude only affects me Grin

(The great benefit of open water swimming over an indoor, chlorinated pool is that it doesn't involve navigating a leisure centre website in order to do it Wink
Bonus points that it's nicer, and safer swimming next to swans than Splashy-Front-Crawl-Man.

PrayMore · 26/08/2025 08:52

I have loved reading this thread, because I don't actually like doing anything. I think almost everything is overrated and overpriced. And it's totally validated that!

AHellOfAGoodNight · 26/08/2025 08:55

I like yoga.

Spa days <shudder>
Cruises… the stuff of my nightmares
Work team building days….just fuck off, and yes, I’ll be sick for every single one.

MyDeftDuck · 26/08/2025 09:00

Zumba! Particular when people have no sense of rhythm……..like me! i was always three steps behind the rest and it just turned to total chaos. Think the instructor was glad when I didn’t go back .

Halloween.

I hate Halloween!! Every year I can’t wait for it to be over.

Hereforthecommentz · 26/08/2025 09:05

Exercise classes, I don't want to be sweating and looking like a beetroot around other people. Running alone is much better.
Musicals = cheesy, naff, boring.
Mini golf, always turns into the kids arguing and waiting behind other people.
Also in the yoga front, cult leaders always start out as yoga teachers, then they turn it into some sex cult.

No one cares what anyone else looks like in classes, everyone is focused on themselves.

Well I care I don't want to be sweating and hot and 10 steps behind or near other sweaty people. Running alone with my music on is peaceful exercise, no one is bothering me, I can get through my own thoughts without someone screaming on a microphone. Each to their own though.

Pdam · 26/08/2025 09:14

There's so many once you have kids and you have to do them on an annual basis, pumpkin picking is definitely up there, we do the light show "magical wonderland" at christmas too it's so £££ but so so shit, does't help it's usually freezing too. Bonfire night, we go to an organised event where our kids will want to spend on rides/hook a duck etc, we'll watch some fireworks (usually in the rain), look at a big bonfire and go home £100 worse off 😆. Halloween/trick or treating, I hate the whole concept of it really but my kids absolutely love it, some of the houses near us really get into it and go to town on the decorations, I just feel like it's pointless and I have kids!

I'll add going to the zoo, it's so expensive trudging around for miles looking at animals in boxes, it's my 4 year olds favourite thing to do so every school holiday/actual holiday abroad we have to go to a zoo.

We do all these things with faked enthusiasm for our kids though, I wonder if they'll turnaround when they're older and tell us they were faking too 😆?

I also hate yoga, and meditation brings me as close as I'll ever come to having a panic attack.

Open water swimming, especially in winter when it seems just to be a pretext for spending a fortune on wetsuits, dryrobes and accessories to keep your head, hands and feet warm and you can only stay in the water for about 15 seconds.

They warn that meditation isn’t for everyone and it can bring on panic attacks in some.

I am interested that so many hate yoga. Stretching is good for you but perhaps yoga feels to many like a simple stretch class gussied up as some kind of spiritual exercise.

GeniuneWorkOfFart · 25/08/2025 14:25

Fake pumpkin picking can absolutely get in the bin. Except it's not a popular opinion on here, there's threads on it every autumn and the people who hate it are roundly told off for being fun suckers and joy sponges.

It feels like a mass delusion to me. Wondering round a muddy field so your kids can pick an already picked pumpkin for 10x the price.

Golf

Agree. Every time I see a golf course, I just think what a waste, there could be horses on there. 🤣🐴

Is it Zumba?

I don't know but they choose a lot of Tom Jones played at top volume.
