Flags & Patron Saints

Yes, yes, all the England Flag shagging is tedious, it is messy it is (hold on to your pearls) lowering the tone (and house prices)

But it represents something, surely? it represents an ever growing bunch of people who feel that they "need to take their country back". So how do we go about combating the bad feeling etc that all these flags raise?

Is it only the St George flag we're allowed to moan about? Pride flags, Palistinian flags and Ukranian flags are also pretty ubiquitous. So much so that it would be difficult, i think, for an alien to recognise which country they were in should they crash land in England.

Should the government listen more to concerns? should they do more to address concerns? Are we going to see a massive swing to the right at the next election if all this is just ignored in the corridors of power?

I have no clue what we can do about it all.

One thing i keep seeing though is "St George was Turkish". So what? He is the patron saint of several other countries he didn't come from either. St Patrick didn't come from the Emerald isle either, but i don't see that thrown around much. (Perhaps we should have a vote and have St Alban or another saint instead? We'd have to rejig the flag, although that's not insurmountable).

IMO it’s not a purely ‘racist’ issue. It’s equally a protest about so much immigration we were never consulted about, which is now costing the country a fortune, and when there is not nearly enough decent, affordable housing available for those already here - both natives and immigrants - and when the NHS is already struggling to cope.

When many people can’t get a GP appt. inside 3 weeks.

When the character of many people’s home areas has changed enormously in the last 20-30 years - a change that none of us was consulted about.

Tony Blair was highly favour of immigration, since he thought the immigrants would do the jobs Brits didn’t want to do, and I dare say he counted on the fact that most of them would in future vote Labour.

It’s not unusual to see the stars & stripes flag flying in lots of gardens and public places in the USA.
I quite like seeing our Union flag or the England flag flying. I know some will think it’s antagonistic but I see it as pride in our country. No more, no less. Just that.

I think we must be the only country in the world that's supposed to be ashamed of its flag and opposed to seeing it. I very much want us to retain our history and pride in what our country has achieved over the centuries. We have got a rich history and have done a lot of good despite what some people would claim. Every country is a mix of good things and bad things, but we need to preserve what we have or we'll lose it forever. Do people really want to see the back of our great buildings, monuments, works of art, Roman remains, traditions, cathedrals, museums, artifacts, historic documents, national parks and wildlife preservation? Probably others I've overlooked and forgotten to mention. Do people not realise that these things will be lost, destroyed, built on and neglected if left to others with no vested interest in them.

People can pour scorn on our Christian past as well, but it helped give us a peaceful and largely tolerant society, set up the first hospitals, care of the poor and schools. Helped abolish slavery, set up charitable organisations and community help for people who needed it.

If you hate what this country is and hate Christianity, then be aware that you definitely won't like its successor.

Weirdly the St. Georges flag is also the flag of the Palestinian feast of St. George. I imagine quite a lot of Palestinians are happy to see it flying.
