Can you speak French?

I’d really like a tattoo that says

“Familiar Hell”
“Unfamiliar Heaven”

I know I can use googled translate but I want to make sure it’s correct.

The correct French expression is “Un enfer familier plutôt qu'un paradis inconnu” (better a known hell than a familiar heaven)
so i am not sure if you wanted to play on that expression?
It is an expression used in psychology

Excellent suggestion! (except it's "unfamiliar" heaven)

Can you speak French?

If you wanted to make it four words (and a symbol) you could always throw in a mathematical symbol which is big with les cool enfants these days:

enfer familier < paradis inconnu

Ciel is more what I would use for heaven, so ciel inhabituel. And never familier. But yeah, odd that you want a tat in a language you don’t speak. Makes me think of the people who get stuff in Mandarin eg fried rice. Looks pretty, I guess!

Years ago I worked with a Chinese colleague. We had a client come in with a tat he clearly thought was something profound and she pointed out that in fact it said, 'closed for cleaning'.

I ended up with “choose from the tattoos below” 🤷‍♂️

Cormoran · 25/08/2025 05:10

All of these sound so wrong in French. Nobody would ever say this in French. It just doesn't work or sound French at all, despite the French words. Translation is more than words.

Yeah clearly my predictive text thinks it’s all
about Pete. And I don’t even know a Pete.

He’d be Pete inconnu then?

Père I think, not pété 🤣

the OP would be better off with the French for Snapped and Farted.

RealPearlDuck · 25/08/2025 06:00

I don't speak French but I just came here to say I like the idea and getting a tattoo that would raise up your mood is always a good idea. Careful, though, I've heard it's addictive and people constantly come back for more 😁

Jessbow · 25/08/2025 06:43

consider latin?

How about Italian?

inferno familiare; paradiso sconosciuto

Beachtastic · 25/08/2025 08:43

marielet · 25/08/2025 01:29

Exactly.

Better the devil you know is literally settling for something because even though it’s shit at least it’s familiar.

I wasn't sure what you were trying to express, my version meant "Heaven eludes me, but I don't care about hell" 🤔

RampantIvy · 25/08/2025 08:50

I'm reminded of the time when David Beckham had a Hindi tattoo of his wife's name, only it was spelled incorrectly.

Advancement / advantage / leading through technology. It's Audi's slogan.

Sorry for randomly quoting just one person but thanks for the advice everyone. I wrongly assumed because it was just 4 words it could be easily translated to have the same meaning. But again thanks for showing me that wasn’t correct.

It would be a very small fine line tattoo that would back on the back of my arm on both sides.

Familiar hell is about living in pain because it’s comfortable, whereas unfamiliar heaven is living a good life but it’s took the uncomfortable to get there. Very simple way of saying it but it means something to me. I think I just wanted it in another language so it was more “private”

I think it's a very valid concept, though I definitely think it would be best to have it in English. Surely it will be non-specific enough and small enough not to give too much away?

Wrt the translation, as a languages teacher I'd say that short, pithy phrases which pack a lot of meaning into a few words are often the very hardest things to translate! I can see why that might not be obvious to most people though.

Yes having worked there we talked about it often. The question mark was why the poster was saying it not what it meant 😂

That’s quite sad though. I don’t think I’ve ever felt the need to cringe at a stranger, least of all say it in the hopes of feeling superior. I genuinely couldn’t imagine being that bitter I would hope to hurt someone by typing out a cruel response.

Feel better soon x

Aw thanks must be lovely to be such a sweetheart x
