Anyone slim and healthy who eats bread every day?

LakesideFrogHotel · 24/08/2025 16:28

Conflicting opinions everywhere about this. I know lots of low-carbers who swear off it and have done for years, but many of them are still fighting the weight.
Also know a few who eat some sort of bread almost daily and are fit and slim. Seems to cut both ways?

I like panini at the weekends with mozzarella, tomato, and can't say it makes much difference, but then I don't eat it daily.

Saw a similar thread about pasta a while back so thought I'd ask about bread!
What about healthy, ow processed breads, wholemeal, too?

Neither bread nor pasta have much to do with weight and health by themselves, but when they are consumed in excessive quantities and not balanced by protein and vegetables they will not be conducive to a calorie controlled and balanced diet. When I was fat I used to eat lots of bread. Now I'm slim (thanks to Mounjaro) I eat bread every morning and 2/3 lunch times a week - but I eat one slice of homemade high protein sourdough for breakfast and if I'm having a veggie burger or sausage sandwich for lunch I usually have a high protein whole grain roll. I eat pasta once a week and have a smaller portion than I used to. I would still struggle to do this without Mounjaro but lots of people are more than capable of controlling their bread portions by themselves and staying slim. Not me :(

Sounds like you have a great range there, tasty and healthy! Good luck with what you're doing!

I eat some type of bread most days - I love bread - and my BMI is 20. It's usually wholemeal bread made in the breadmaker. Sometimes I have pitta bread or naan bread. If I don't have bread for breakfast or lunch, I will have other carbs during the day, for example cereal for breakfast and pasta for dinner.

Yuja · 24/08/2025 18:33

I am a size 6-8 and I eat bread, pasta, and all other carbs. In fact, I eat all food groups - just not in massive quantities.

I wonder why the people who eat bread are pretty chill, just saying they eat it and state their age/weight, but those who don't eat bread or carbs are getting very bossy and trying to educate us all?

Ah you’ve jumped the shark there OP.

@MrsTerryPratchett nailed it a couple of pages back - there’s a real disdain in your posts for people avoiding carbs.

I don’t care how many carbs you eat. Knock yourself out.

I did keto from Aug to December last year and lost over three stone. But what was really interesting was the swollen feet and ankles that I suffer from chronically vanished almost instantly. Just went. At Christmas I ate carbs and my ankles puffed up yet again. January I switched to low-carb, not keto, and the swelling vanished again.

You sneer at us low-carbers all you like. I love bread and potatoes. Not fussed about pasta really. But I have no bread/potato/rice/pasta with my meals other than a very occasional piece of low-carb brown bread. If I eat carbs I swell up and start to gain weight.

I’m eating similar calories so it’s not that. Very sadly for me, my body doesn’t like simple carbs but seems to cope ok with moderate quantities of complex carbs found in starchy veg. I try to keep my carbs to less than 50g per day, but ideally under 30g. One slice of white bread is typically 22-27g.

Years ago I remember hearing Jennifer Anniston saying how a slice of bread was a treat and thinking how sad that would be. That’s literally me now 😂 And yes, I am also of the perimenopausal lot.

Not all bodies are the same but some of us find a very real and genuine difference if we drop carbs. Not sure why that’s such cause for scorn.

I don't think it's odd at all, it doesn't hurt to dispel myths about generalisations concerning healthy macronutrients.

I suppose MN isn't the place for a discussion about food or nutrition. It's like wading into unsteady waters Grin

But they aren’t myths for many people.

If you can eat bread, don’t gain weight, never had an issue, starting a thread about how bread is fine and shouldn’t be demonised is just ignorance. You know nothing about excess appetite, satiety or any of it because you don’t have to. LC people aren’t snippy or lacking in chill. There are lovely supportive threads that have run for years with Bootcamp people happily chatting. But this is the diet equivalent of “I don’t have anxiety/depression and I do yoga every morning at 5am. I have a great mood! You should do that.” It is irritating because we’re all heard it 10000 times.

there is no need to make such a pretty unremarkable thread so deep and serious. Not everyone goes online to spar. I will leave it at that.

With respect, it seems no one can agree, and that's understandable, but I do find low carbers tend to get preachy about it.
That said, perhaps they've suffered judgement previously or had a bad time.

I am cool with people not getting along with carbs, just as long as they don't try to educate everyone into one view. As this thread shows, it's a mixd bag, many eat bread and are happy. Surely we can all accept that without going overboard.

Yep! Swelling gone, joints are like a 20 yo, IBS gone, migraines gone.

The weight loss and maintenance are the least important aspects for me of the LC way of eating!

‘With respect’ Grin

LakesideFrogHotel · 24/08/2025 18:52

tbh telling people that not eating carbs makes your joints like that of a 20 year old swims very close to recommending disordered thinking around food.

I know a few people with ED, and that kind of 'cure it all' approach causes damage.
If it works for you, don't expect it to work for everyone.
If you have scientific proof that eating carbs will age the joints, please let the government know.

Load of old cobblers.

NotMyRealAccount · 24/08/2025 18:54

Yes, bread fulfils the healthy eating criterion of "something my grandmother would have eaten", though my gran's preference was for white sliced with butter and jam and I'm a sucker for fancy breads. I have around 100g of bread most days. However, if I did want to lose weight, cutting out bread would be the easiest change to make to my diet.

LakesideFrogHotel · 24/08/2025 18:55

Look love, you have barged into a thread about people who enjoy and keep healthy whilst eating bread and decided to make a mockery of it and take over the entire conversation. Talk about attention seeking.

It's rather bizarre.

where are people getting their wholemeal bread from? I can't find a tasty one anywhere.

It's very difficult to find one that isn't overly processed, spongy or salty. Jason's do a wholemeal sourdough, you can get it in Waitrose, Ocado, Morrisons & Tesco. That's about the best we can find at the moment.

Yeh, i tried the Jasons wholemeal recently and found I had to toast it for a good while to find it palatable. Then heaps of peanut butter Grin
Love their other breads. Sadly I do prefer the white versions of sourdough and the jason's rolls are yummy!

I tend to only eat bread a couple of times a week so have settled on the crosta and mollica panini. Again, it's white, but what can you do..

I know people who eat bread and stay healthy and slim. No mockery required.

AAAgh, look, I think we are probably both decent people IRL.
We have been a bit of a pig to each other in this thread, so I will apologise.

I would rather we just make friends and have a laugh tbh.

Unfortunately white crusty bread almost always tastes nicer than whole meal bread except for maybe some really heavily seeded whole meal bread that is divine when toasted and with a bit of butter and marmalade …..yum!!……dreaming of it now whilst desperately trying ( and failing) to loose a few pounds

Branster · 24/08/2025 19:11

OP, answering your original question I am one of those individuals.
Growing up we always had bread as part of our daily diet. I don't seek bread every day but I consume it regularly without a second thought to the quantity. I am not originally from the UK so I am used to fresh bread as opposed to sliced packaged bread. But I do eat this type as well for the occasional sandwich or as toast. Not fussed on UPF or calories or gluten or carbs, but I instinctively tend to choose 'healthier' or 'cleaner' options when shopping.
I refuse to buy bread from somewhere like Gail's on the basis that they are over selling themselves.
Sourdough bread has never grown on me but that Jansen bread really is lovely when toasted.
Good quality basics like bread and butter and milk should be affordable to all. Sadly this is not the case in the UK.
Saying all that, if I became destitute tomorrow I wouldn't hesitate to feed myself and family cheap white plain sliced bread with baked beans because we'd have to eat something.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 24/08/2025 19:13

Me 👋.

I had two slices of stodgy white toast with butter and peanut butter for breakfast. I eat garlic bread at least once a week. I eat toast several times a week. I’ll have a panini or torpedo roll if I fancy one. If I have a burger or hot dog I’ll eat the bun. I have either a sandwich or a wrap for lunch most days.

I do not shy away from the bread.

im 40, 161cm tall and weight 51kg.

I find that if you run enough, you can eat pretty much whatever you like and not have to stress about it.

See when I was 40, I could eat pretty much anything I wanted with zero exercise. Bread, rice, sugar... all of it. Effortless size 6-8.

Now at 53, I have got rid of my car and walk some 10 to 15 km a day. But I still have a belly, despite reducing- not totally eliminating- carbs. Now a large 12.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 24/08/2025 19:23

2 years ago I stopped eating carbs including bread and changed other eating habits to lose 2.5 stone. I'm now about 20/21 BMI. I eat carbs occasionally but eat homemade wholemeal sourdough daily. Bread is healthier if frozen and defrosted as it turns the starch into resistant starch. Toasting it makes it even healthier.

No. I've never run in my life, or swum, or been near a gym. Walking is fine.

(Bread every day, 61, 50kg).
