Anyone slim and healthy who eats bread every day?

Conflicting opinions everywhere about this. I know lots of low-carbers who swear off it and have done for years, but many of them are still fighting the weight.
Also know a few who eat some sort of bread almost daily and are fit and slim. Seems to cut both ways?

I like panini at the weekends with mozzarella, tomato, and can't say it makes much difference, but then I don't eat it daily.

Saw a similar thread about pasta a while back so thought I'd ask about bread!
What about healthy, ow processed breads, wholemeal, too?

where are people getting their wholemeal bread from? I can't find a tasty one anywhere.

My husband makes a lovely wholemeal/rye loaf in the machine.

hangerup · 24/08/2025 17:51

@LakesideFrogHotel the average mumsnet user is older though and I think some find it harder to digest carbs as they age.

I am curious when reading about it how many people say it leaves them hungry or ravenous and they feel an urge to eat the entire loaf.

I wonder if this is something to do with satiety and hormones going askew?
Anything more than two slices would leave me pretty full, so maybe it's just the luck of the draw.

So maybe it isn't the bread exactly, but something that is already broken metabolically?

I think it's the type of bread you eat. I eat wholemeal bread from the bakery and 2 slices per meal is largely enough. It's delicious and plenty if fibre so it makes you feel full.

A lot of supermarket bread often contain added sugar which is probably why people tend to overeat (glycemic trigger).

Yes so older as I said and presumably you are aware people are different?

Me.

I eat bread just about every single day and have done for most of my 56 years (well, since being on solids anyway 😁)

Never had any weight problems in my life though.

Same. I wouldn't describe myself as 'slim and healthy' at 70 with assorted conditions, but I'm not overweight and never have been. Through most of my adulthood, I was a size 10 at 5'8" and extremely fit. Always eaten mountains of bread!

I make a low-key effort to avoid bread made with: emulsifiers E471 (Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids); E472e (diacetyl tartaric acid ester of mono- and diglycerides or DATEM) and E481; (sodium stearoyl lactylate or SSL). I'm not religious about it, though: I do like the soft-but-firm texture they give, and sometimes use laboratory emulsifiers in my own cooking.

For what its worth, Sainsbury's and Aldi carry good sliced loaves without mono- and diglycerides. I don't shop at Lidl or Waitrose so can't speak for them. French bread and your paninis shouldn't contain them, anyway, as the products don't call for smoothness.

Stuff I deliberately limit includes: Fizzy drinks; squash and fruit juice; desserts made mostly of sugar and emulsifiers; sweets; anything that doesn't seem to be Actual Food - I read the labels. Everything else is fair game, and I'm a chip monster!

Upsidedownagain · 24/08/2025 18:05

Yes, I eat bread most days, often for breakfast.

I'm in my 60s and have never been overweight. Weigh under 8 stone, wear size 6 or 8.

There was a celeb doctor who looked at blood sugar spikes and how bread is a trigger from some people. I think it was Tim Spector, the man behind the Zoe programme, who studied this. Personally, I believe bread is a staple in our diet and has been for centuries. I would only avoid it if I were coeliac.

Yes - very likely was Tim Spector.

I remember hearing that people deal with carbs differently, as in some people get a blood sugar spike and some don't.

Ah, I had no idea you were an. authority on it.

None of the women I know over 60 have had to 'give up' carbs, so you are correct, we are all different.

So most women on MN are over 60 now?
I honestly thought it was a good mix of 30-60 generally, going off how many other Gen X's I meet here!

I thought sugar spikes were normal if a person was metabolically healthy?

Not sure though!

You know blood sugar spikes aren't bad, unless you're pre/diabetic with blood sugar like a giant rollercoaster? There'd be something wrong with you or your food if eating didn't cause a 'spike'.

GarlicLitre · 24/08/2025 18:11

It's teatime on a warm Bank Holiday Saturday, @LakesideFrogHotel. We oldies are the ones with spare time to fuck around on Mumsnet 😄

LakesideFrogHotel · 24/08/2025 18:11

I wonder why the people who eat bread are pretty chill, just saying they eat it and state their age/weight, but those who don't eat bread or carbs are getting very bossy and trying to educate us all?

FunnyThing2 · 24/08/2025 18:15

I had huge problems controlling my weight until I gave up wheat. Then it just stopped and I have been slim ever since.

Devilsmommy · 24/08/2025 16:32

I'm a size 6 and eat processed bread everyday. I think it's all dependant on the individual. Some people can eat loads and never gain a lb, like me and some will gain just looking at it. If you enjoy it and it's not affecting you In any way then what's the issue? Forgot to say, I'm not healthy in the slightest either. Smoker and major caffeine addict🤭

Edited

Correct, depends on your system, age, build, hormones, reaction to sugar….no two people are the same….some people can eat processed food all day long and look and feel great, others would look and feel horrendous if the did the same

You have not been ‘chill’ at all. You were pretty mean to @soupyspoon

And this post is clearly attempting to wind people up. Would have been nice to discuss the differences in metabolism and reaction to food. But that thread isn’t this thread.

Incorrect, high blood sugar spikes can cause people to get more may around their abdomen and certainly after a certain age

Holluschickie · 24/08/2025 18:17

This is a very odd thread.

LakesideFrogHotel · 24/08/2025 18:20

I don't think it's odd at all, it doesn't hurt to dispel myths about generalisations concerning healthy macronutrients.

I suppose MN isn't the place for a discussion about food or nutrition. It's like wading into unsteady waters Grin

Look up Sean Casey, he ate nothing but sandwiches for 30 days to show bread isn’t the devil.

LakesideFrogHotel · 24/08/2025 18:26

For anyone who doesn't eat pasta or bread, but can stand a few potatoes, here is my favourite, easy recipe:

A bunch of baby spuds, softened with steam for a few mins then chuck into oven with button mushrooms, sliced baby peppers, a handful of pine nuts, 2 sprouts and then season with pepper, garlic and EVOO.

When done, add a handful of rocket and a few teaspoons of green pesto, mix in.
Add protein of choice.

Love it so much!

I ought to have started a potato thread..

Occasional spikes for a healthy person are going to be fine. But numerous spikes are surely going to lead to weight gain because ant excess glucose is turned into fat and a quickly dropping blood sugar levels are going to tell your brain that you are hungry.

HangingOver · 24/08/2025 18:27

My BMI is 18 and I had five bits of bread today already (mini loaf)

StrikeandRobinlol · 24/08/2025 18:27

French people

BabyCatFace · 24/08/2025 18:28

Neither bread nor pasta have much to do with weight and health by themselves, but when they are consumed in excessive quantities and not balanced by protein and vegetables they will not be conducive to a calorie controlled and balanced diet. When I was fat I used to eat lots of bread. Now I'm slim (thanks to Mounjaro) I eat bread every morning and 2/3 lunch times a week - but I eat one slice of homemade high protein sourdough for breakfast and if I'm having a veggie burger or sausage sandwich for lunch I usually have a high protein whole grain roll. I eat pasta once a week and have a smaller portion than I used to. I would still struggle to do this without Mounjaro but lots of people are more than capable of controlling their bread portions by themselves and staying slim. Not me :(
