Anyone slim and healthy who eats bread every day?

Conflicting opinions everywhere about this. I know lots of low-carbers who swear off it and have done for years, but many of them are still fighting the weight.
Also know a few who eat some sort of bread almost daily and are fit and slim. Seems to cut both ways?

I like panini at the weekends with mozzarella, tomato, and can't say it makes much difference, but then I don't eat it daily.

Saw a similar thread about pasta a while back so thought I'd ask about bread!
What about healthy, ow processed breads, wholemeal, too?

My parents- slim and healthy all their lives, both eat two slices of toast every day for breakfast and a sandwich for lunch or bread and soup for lunch.

Chewbecca · 24/08/2025 16:48

Almost the entire population pre 1980s?

With much more moving about to counteract & less junk.

LakesideFrogHotel · 24/08/2025 16:48

I think bread is injected with so much these days that it is overly processed.

there are tons of healthy bread options now tho!

I feel like I need to eat bread. At one point I decided to cut out wheat from my diet. I felt good but dropped way too much weight to the point I was malnourished.

I think I just don't like pasta that much, wouldn't really eat cereal or porridge oats, rice is ok but boring. So the only carb left was potatoes and I could only eat them once a day.

So definitely bring on the bread! I love an everything bagel. Or a nice fresh baguette or ciabatta. My mate's dad used to make the best focaccia every Sunday. Way before it was trendy.

But I think it is more common to see people reducing carbs who are overweight or higher BMI.
Forums like MN are full of people trying to lose weight and claim to not eat carbs.
If it was a solution, why are they still dieting? It's all super confusing.

At my slimmest I always ate bread but was very active! If I drink wine I can blow up within 2 weeks.

Oh dear. There is a weird undercurrent of judgement going on. You ‘can’t understand’ and are ‘confused’ by things. But what it sounds like is incredulity and judgement.

I don’t eat carbs. I’ve lost and maintained a loss of about 40 pounds. I still don’t eat them because they don’t agree with me. I’m not ‘dieting’ I just have a way of eating that suits me. I’m also active, it does nothing to lose weight at all. It does help motivate and maintain.

I think just trusting that people know themselves better than you do. And feeling very very lucky you can eat bread. I wish I could, I can’t.

LakesideFrogHotel · 24/08/2025 16:51

Potatoes are my fave carb! Little baby ones, crushed, with a bit of olive oil and pepper.

To look at it from another perspective, I used to eat bread pretty much every day, but became gluten intolerant and now avoid bread (except for the occasional bit of rubbish gluten free bread). Giving up bread hasn't made me slimmer!

NapoleonsToe · 24/08/2025 16:52

We're in France. People here eat tons of bread every day, yet France's rate of obesity is far lower than the UK's. So you absolutely can eat bread and be a healthy weight.

I needed to lose a bit of weight at the same time as buying a bread maker. Started to make my own wholemeal bread with grains. I ate some every day and lost weight easily. Demonising one food isnt the way to lose weight, especially when it's bread.

Geez, no one is judging anyone, just calm down.

I used to be able to! Can’t now 😖I’m 47.

Holluschickie · 24/08/2025 16:53

I am Asian. We carry weight differently- in our bellies- and have less muscle, plus more insulin resistance. At a BMI of 23- 24, I border on pre-diabetic.

Believe me, I would love to eat carbs. But I have to restrict them post menopause.
All bodies are not the same.

OldJohn · 24/08/2025 16:54

I am a 78-year-old man.I am 5ft 11 and have a 34-inch waist.I eat toast every day for breakfast and most days I have a sandwich for lunch (often it is a sandwich from Subway).
I think that for my age and height I am considered to be slim.

LakesideFrogHotel · 24/08/2025 16:54

Yes, just to clarify I have already said we are all different. This is why it's interesting.

The French thing is fascinating too.

Yes, but not shit bread. Has to be good equality or home made (which is pretty easy) and brown. I quite often have a few slices for breakfast and a slice for supper before bed!

Do you eat fruit or starchy veg, or whole grains? They're all rich in carbohydrates, and I'm wondering if you ever go to the loo if not Grin

Potatoes are very high for satiety. No comparison with bread.

And no, telling me to calm down is telling. I think it may be subconscious but you are judging.

Chemenger · 24/08/2025 16:56

Lots of bread eaten in Spain and Italy (they have cake for breakfast too).

RedRosie · 24/08/2025 16:56

Me! 60, 5'5" and 9 stone for 40 years. Mostly fit and well.

I do like really good artisan poncy pricy sourdough though. Bought or homemade.

(I also like good bakers wholemeal, much less available now)

LakesideFrogHotel · 24/08/2025 16:56

Does anyone else find wholemeal bread a bit spongey? I like it more crisp, aerated. Jason's do some lovely sourdoughs.

I say ‘no carbs’ for expediency. No foods that are ‘carbs’ almost in their entirely. Bread, pasta, rice, etc. I eat green leaves every day, and am not strict. Vegetables every meal, some berries, and other fruits occasionally.

Holluschickie · 24/08/2025 16:57

When I do eat bread, I eat poncy sourdough or chappatis.

3pears · 24/08/2025 16:58

I’m 5 foot 4 and about 8 stone 9. I eat bread probably every other day, maybe less if I choose a wrap instead of a sandwich one day. I don’t eat more than 2 slices a day.

LakesideFrogHotel · 24/08/2025 16:58

People who don't eat bread can get healthy alternatives via legumes, lentils, fruit.

I once went very low carb to see if it helped an indigestion issues years ago. I actually gained weight and felt sluggish. I would die without my spuds and carrots!

Ah, when you said you don't eat carbs, I thought you actually meant it! So no wholegrains even?

Sounds like carnivore?
A lot who use this way of eating say it helped gut issues. I couldn't do it myself but I can't blame them seeking relief.
