Wwyd - tonsillitis

I have a severe case of tonsillitis. Started antibiotics just before bed. Every time I fall asleep, I wake up choking on my tonsils. If I sit up I'm fine but I can't sleep sitting up.

Google tells me I should go to a&e for this but I think if I can give the antibiotics another 20 hours, I might be able to sleep tomorrow night.

Background - have only ever had tonsillitis twice before and spent almost a week in hospital each time for iv antibiotics.

Am I mad to think I can wait this out?

I’d phone 111 for advice. You could be in for a long night. Can you prop yourself up with pillows to rest while you’re on the phone. It does sound like you have it pretty bad and choking while you sleep is a bit concerning

Do you have someone else in the house?

personally I’d prop myself up and watch tv and ride it out for a few more hours.

Ow, tonsillitis can be really painful. It can be caused by a viral infection or a bacterial one. Had it many times as a child and my DS9 has had it as well.

If you've been given anti-b's it must be bacterial. In that, the DR who checked your throat saw white/yellow spots?

Struggling to breathe or choking is next-level. I'm in Australia so can't advise on hospital protocol- is 111 worth a shot?

A&E now. Was reading about a man sent home twice with tonsillitis only to choke to death at home. If you are already choking go in for monitoring so you are in best place if your airways do close .

I would prop yourself up with pillows. I have to do this when I have a chest infection and call 111.

You could get meal replacement drinks, like complan or huel to help keep your energy up. Keep an eye on your temp too. If it's normal, you might be able to wait another while. Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in soon. You poor thing

You need to be careful you are not developing a quincy

Miner4aHeartofGold · 24/08/2025 06:20

A&E. If you've needed an antibiotic IV drip for your tonsillitis in the past, chances are you need one again and the sooner you start it the better.

CrotchetyQuaver · 24/08/2025 09:03

Are you sure it's not turned into quinsy in which case it's a hospital job and IV antibiotics

Thanks all, I got through the night and came to a&e this morning. Have been admitted and will be in for a few days to get it under control.
