Selfies

Was just thinking today going off friends photos etc at how comfortable other people seem to be at taking and being happy to post their Selfies for everyone to see. I myself cannot do this. I absolutely hate how I look in a selfie and find them much much worse than a photo that someone else has taken of me. I feel so self conscious taking a selfie and kind of a bit vein that im taking a photo of just myself, no idea why i feel that way as selfies are the done thing these days. I could also never set a selfie as my profile pic because of that same strange vanity reason. Does anyone else feel this way about selfies or is it just me being weird. im late 40s if that relevant in anyway.

I feel exactly the same. I find it odd it’s so so prevalent plus I hate my face in photos, isn’t the face distorted at that close range? I can’t hold the bloody things and press the button anyway.

Loads of people don't take them and wouldn't use a selfie as a profile picture. It's absolutely fine not to do this. If people do like it that's fine but they are completely optional.

Regarding vanity, people vary - for some people the fact they take photos a lot is because they are not fussed, for others it's because they really are fussed.

But if you prefer not to, that's completely fine and not unusual.

Yep, same, similar age. I'm fine being in photos but the thought of taking one of myself and posting it online feels massively vain and weird. LOOK AT ME.

Over the years I've followed lots of social accounts of people that claim to have issues with self esteem or anxiety yet have no qualms about putting photos of themselves on the internet, seems totally at odds to me, as someone who has fairly good self esteem (came with age) I wouldn't dream of doing that!

For me it probably stems down to anything appearance related being taken the piss out of at school, as was the fashion in the old days, so I can't see why anyone would willingly put themselves out there 😂

I absolutely hate my face in photos too and selfies with them being so close up and showing every bloody line, wrinkle and blemish are absolutely awful, they depress the life out of me. I can actually think I look reasonably ok in the mirror but take a selfie and its absolutely bloody awful!

Yes can totally relate to this .
I grew up with a mother who never took photos and hated them and would go mad if anyone pointed at camera at her. I remember also coping her camera avoiding ways in my younger days as I suppose I grew up thinking photos were a bad thing and to be avoided.
I often wonder if this plays a part in how I feel about selfies being vain.
im perfectly fine with having a regular photo taken by someone else. still cannot post them online anywhere though. for my close families eyes only!

I also find video calls excruciating for some reason which are also the done thing these days. hate if anyone, even family suggests a video call. oh no just a regular old fashioned voice call will do thank you!
