My 9 yo has been training as part of a football team and has his first ever game tomorrow. He's been so, so excited as it's the first time he's ever been selected for a game.

Unfortunately today he was running about outside and tripped over, whacking his leg off of a wooden pallet. His knee has been really sore all day since.

We've applied ice, he's been resting up on the sofa, but it's still sore and he's complaining it's sore to walk.

I think I'm going to have to cancel the football match but he's so gutted about this and ridiculous as it sounds but I feel so upset for him. He's been building up to this for months and months.

Any miracle cures ?? Anything at all I can do to make it better for tomorrow??

He’ll be fine in the morning, go along and he can always come off if it hurts

He might be feeling a bit nervous about the game too if it’s his first one. My footballer (now fully grown) always used to get a mystery injury, or one that felt worse to him than it actually was, before a game if he was worried. Magic cream on the injury and speak to the coach beforehand to let him or her know to watch out for them would be my advice.

He’ll be fine, just don’t make a fuss about it in the morning and carry on as normal, he’s only banged his knee.

Funsummerfun · 23/08/2025 20:39

He will be fine. Go for it. Hope they win!!

DD swears by Deep Heat gel when her knees are sore from netball. Hopefully it will feel better tomorrow and it’s just a bump.

See how he is tomorrow, but I'd rest it if still not comfortable to walk. It would be sad but he will play again.

Pancakeflipper · 23/08/2025 21:24

He will be OK tomorrow. If he's struggling on the pitch, the coach will substitute them.

Notquitegrownup2 · 23/08/2025 21:26

Yy to deep heat in the morning, if he wants to play.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 23/08/2025 21:29

Bit of calpol and he’ll be fine!!

Doublebubblegum · 23/08/2025 21:44

Thanks all. No deep heat in the house and the game is first thing so won't be able to get any in time.

He limped up the stairs to bed. It must be sore as deffo not like him to still be going on about it!

Am hoping after a whole night lying in bed he'll wake up in the morning feeling much better.

He'll be fine once he's there with his friends/team. If it's the 1st game I imagine there will be lots of swapping out players to give everyone a shot. It's not like he's playing in the FA Cup.
