Ooohh yes, I have Studland Bay on my list!

I’ve not been to the Lake District either, but am a bit clueless where is best to go, especially as in summer hols, it feels like it would be incredibly busy..

Grassington is a beautiful village and would make an ideal base to explore the Dales.
Malham is also lovely.

Hawes would be another good central base - a pretty village with lots of cafƩs and independent shops. It can be busy in high season though.

If you're fortunate with the weather, the Dales is a most beautiful and peaceful part of the country to visit.

Glenfinnan Viaduct, Mallaig and the beaches around there. Stunning

KimHwn · 24/08/2025 11:46

Eryri.

Inner Hebrides - fantastic beaches (think Caribbean without the heat). If sunny it is glorious and peaceful. Cornish beaches ditto but overcrowded in high season. There are two beautiful gardens in Cornwall - Trebah and Heligan. No matter how many cars in car park they never seem busy. North Devon - visit Widemouth where there is a 'castle' with a childrens trail, Lydford Gorge - a leafy, bosky walk down to a waterfall (probably dried up this year!). Similarly Canonteign Falls. A small village on the edge of Dartmoor called Lustleigh - a lovely walk along side a stream.

Good luck!

My favourite routes for bike rides are across the Berkshire Downs, often missed by the seaside, the hills, the rivers and lakes people - yet near areas of high population. If I can tie in the A417 through Blewbury, B4494 Chain Hill from Wantage, I'd cut across towards Hungerford, stop in Hungerford to admire the canal (and a sneaky pistachio ice cream from the Tutti Pole). I'd head through Kintbury (pretty), up Ball Hill, through Highclere (tea at the Castle perhaps). I'd cut through Old Burchclere, past Ecchinswell but may take a detour for the views. Finally I'd head into Kingsclere, and up Ashford Hill, through Brimpton, over the A4 skirt Bucklebury, Frilsham (Pot Kiln, nice pub, think it's still there. or the 4 points near Ashampstead), over the M4 then head down into Streatley (admiring the views) back to where I started.

I love the Highlands, staying in Wester Ross right now. Lots to do, although all outdoorsy - we have been lucky with mild weather. The landscape is as stunning as I remember it from when I was a kid.

Beautiful, but will never quite match Dounreay 🤣

Octavia64 · 24/08/2025 16:04

Lake District.

we did it by public transport this year.

there’s a train to Windermere and the buses are (genuinely) pretty good in the summer.

in Bowness the jetty where the boats go from gets insanely busy but Windermere itself was fine.

we got the bus to Ambleside, Waterhead (for a swim) and the Windermere jetty museum.
