Payment for evening dog sitting - how much?

Friend's DC (18) is looking after our dog while we all go out. DDog can cope with about 3 hours max on his own, but we'll probably be gone for about 5 hours. He'll be fed and walked before we go, but friend's DC will be in the house and give him a quick walk to do his business before his bedtime. Friend's DC will be provided with the usual snacks, wifi password, access to Netflix etc etc. How much would you pay them?

I mean minimum wage is £10 per hour but as she is literally just sitting watching TV I’d pay her like £30 and help yourself to snacks. Discuss with her beforehand and she can either accept or decline

You aren’t a responsible owner if you leave your dog alone for more than 3 hours?

Please re read my comment and the comment that I quoted. I said they are responsible for NOT leaving the dog alone for more than 3 hours

Please re read MY post 😆

clearly I’m asking whether you think that if someone leaves their dog alone for more than 3 hours, that person isn’t a responsible dog owner @Newbie8918

Candlesandmatches · 25/08/2025 06:42

At 18 they are not earning pocket money. They are adults. Would you like a reliable dog sitter? Or have to keep scrabbling around to find someone? Pay the going rate.

3 hours isn’t a hard and fast cut off however, knowing how much your dog can handle and accommodating that is responsible. Mine can do 4-5 hours. I don’t find it ‘limiting’. I just take steps to accommodate her if I need to be gone longer.

What a cheapskate you are! I hope your friend’s DC tells you to do one! You’re off on a jolly and your dog struggles so you want someone there! Grow up and pay the going rate or don’t take your Lardy ass off out!

But she’s not a cheapskate is she? The going rate for 24 hours by a fully licensed boarder is £35 where I live. It’s not an hourly rate. Whilst walking is £15 for an Hour, sitting is around £25-30 for 5-6 hours in your home. Daycare is £25 for 8 hours in their home/premises.

suggesting the same hourly rate as walking isn’t reasonable, especially when professionals don’t actually even charge this!

That’s awesome

I am sure some would find it limiting

£12 or £16 an hour to sit on the sofa, eat snacks and watch the dog sleeping?! Err no Grin

Why not? That’s what most babysitters do when looking after small children in the evening. They are giving up their time to help you, don’t be so tight.

Because £75 isn’t the going rate for 5 hours, even when it’s a professional dog sitter with insurance and licensing overheads. The hourly price for walking and sitting isn’t comparable. I pay £25 for a full day daycare and £50 max for 24 hours boarding. £30 would be generous in this context.

I hate tell you this but dog kennel workers don’t sit with your dog for 5 hours in the evening. Maybe I missed it but why are you even hiring someone if you are willing to board your dog for 24 hours? If you have these rates in your head, then why ask for opinions?

Lots to cover here……I didn’t ask for opinions. I know what I pay!

I’ve never used a kennels….. ever. Whenever I need an overnight, I use my daycare provider (she works from her home with the correct ratios and is licensed and insured) and will also do overnight stays. My dog snoozes on her couch in the evening and sleeps in her crate upstairs, same as home.

Once for a wedding, she pet sat mine and my sisters dogs at our home for 5 hours. I paid £25 and gave £5 tip.

I go to the office once a week 8-6 including commute, hence daycare. I pay £25 for all day.

I did extensive research before I choose her. Compared lots of environments and prices. This is the going rate. Literally no one charges £16 per hour for anything other than walks.

Your post is LITERALLY asking how much to pay someone for dog sitting. So you did ask for opinions, did you not??? . You seem to have all your facts lined up about how much dog sitting and boarding costs so why are you vehemently arguing against suggestions? Do you understand how forums work? Fine you don’t agree with my suggestion. Why don’t you just take the suggestion you like the most and move on?

So leave the fking dog then this kind of behaviour is why the dog cant be left alone to begin with ! It's a dog not a child ffs

What? It’s not for an hour. OP is being responsible. Dogs generally shouldn’t be left for long periods.
If OP said I’ll just leave dog, it’ll probably bark and annoy the neighbours and might be desperate for a wee then they would be pilloried.
My teenage dgc would happily dogsit for £5 ph plus snacks. It’s hardly onerous.
