Payment for evening dog sitting - how much?

Friend's DC (18) is looking after our dog while we all go out. DDog can cope with about 3 hours max on his own, but we'll probably be gone for about 5 hours. He'll be fed and walked before we go, but friend's DC will be in the house and give him a quick walk to do his business before his bedtime. Friend's DC will be provided with the usual snacks, wifi password, access to Netflix etc etc. How much would you pay them?

£12 or £16 an hour to sit on the sofa, eat snacks and watch the dog sleeping?! Err no Grin

Mad. What happened to the days when a teenager sitting on the sofa was considered to be worth less than the minimum wage for adults over 23, plus £1!

Glitchymn1 · 22/08/2025 16:28

£15-£20 ?
Os it regular or a one off…..
She has no expenses, she isn’t self employed, she’s doesn’t have insurance.

caramac04 · 22/08/2025 16:37

£20, maybe £25 if you’re feeling generous.
I’d do for a bottle of wine and a bag of chipsticks. But only if I like you. Dog - no problem.

£20 sounds about right to me

Me too.

Ryanhairbag · 22/08/2025 17:08

Definitely no more than £30. Here it’s £25 for an overnight stay for my dog. £30 seems a nice wedge of cash but easy to earn

Astrabees · 22/08/2025 17:09

Our qualified and experienced dog sitter charges £24 for 3 hours CNN or £11 for a 30 minute drop in.

ShaunaSadeki · 22/08/2025 17:09

I’d probably do it for £20 and my teens/young adults definitely would!

DinoLil · 22/08/2025 17:16

My dog sitter charges £15 ph

Silverbirchleaf · 22/08/2025 17:20

£25 seems reasonable to me.

If you treasure your dog the way I treasure ours, you’ll pay that. You get what you pay for.

That’s nonsense. It’s the same person who will treat the dog exactly the same way whether they get paid £75 or £20.
id offer £30 - £40 all in op. It’s easy money.

OK - a variety of answers. I'll go for somewhere around the middle.

You need to contact her and agree beforehand. It’s unfair to make a unilateral decision and only tell her on the evening. As you can see from this thread lots of posters think she should be paid more than minimum wage and maybe that’s what she is thinking. I’d think less is ok but you need to give her the choice.

bekindtome · 22/08/2025 18:14

I would offer £25. I’ve asked my 18y and she said she would be happy with that

purpleygrey · 22/08/2025 18:22

Silverbirchleaf · 22/08/2025 17:20

I agree. Both sides should be happy with that.

rookiemere · 22/08/2025 18:28

Jeez there are some crazy figure being bandied about here. £20-25 is more than enough , along with some high value treats for humans and for dogs.

dammit88 · 22/08/2025 18:29

£25 I’d say

Vitriolinsanity · 22/08/2025 18:29

£25 plus some popcorn and coke.

Vitriolinsanity · 22/08/2025 18:31

I’ve just paid a teen £100 to mind my cats for 10 days. She just needed to spend 30 minutes a day feeding and being in the house for a stroke, and let them know there was a human.

Cheaper than the cattery, happy cats, happy teen.

SirChenjins · 22/08/2025 18:56

£30 has been agreed - teen very happy with that and both are now watching telly with treats.

What treats?

BreakfastClubBlues · 22/08/2025 18:59

£16 an hour?! Wow

Once when I was a teen I fed the neighbour's cats for a few days while they were away. They paid me £40 and my mum fog-marched me back over there and made me give half back 😳

I think about £25-£30 would be generous.

I think that’s more than generous, you’ve provided treats too. My teens would have been chuffed to bits.

It is the going rate for sitting in someone else's house all evening.
